24hr Reset Retreat At May Hill Gloucs

With Danny Shmulevitch

RESET RETREAT MAY HILL
THE GATEWAY TO A DEEPER CONNECTION

The Reset Retreat at May Hill provides a gateway to deeper connection – to yourself, to nature, and to your colleagues. What you’ll learn in these precious hours can be used to inform your decision-making at work as well as at home and enable you to more easily access your intuition wherever you are.

Your team will spend 24 hours in Danny’s company as he shares the timeless wisdom gained during forty years spent living and working among indigenous tribespeople. You will experience what it feels like to reconnect with your instinctual self by dissolving the separation between you and nature and explore a deeper, more physical way of feeling and connecting with the world.

What to expect

The environment is not separate from ourselves;
we are inside it and it is inside us; we make it and it makes us.”

Davi Kopenawa, Yanomami tribesman

Arrival

You’ll arrive to a beautifully restored farmhouse in Gloucestershire, at the foot of May Hill, where you’ll be made to feel at home and well-cared for in every sense. We travel from from here, on foot, to the beautiful woodland and wild and open grassland of May Hill, a Site of Special Scientific Interest, with its spectacular views and natural green cathedral.

Schedule

Arrive at May Hill Farm at 11.30am, where you’re invited for a delicious, locally-sourced lunch. You can either arrange your own travel independently, or we can arrange this for you. Danny will provide compelling insights, based on the wisdom of the indigenous people of Sinai and Kalahari, that underpin the purpose of this retreat.

After lunch, we’ll walk for a mile and half to our basecamp. Along the way, you’ll understand the orientation of the energy field, and the impacts of the way we live today on our ability to feel and connect with it.

You’ll spend the night sleeping under the stars in comfort, held by the beauty of the ancient woodland. Ideally, we recommend an overnight fast (no eating from lunch to breakfast the following morning). Our experience has shown that this is the best way to gain clarity in both mind and body. This is optional and we will support you if you choose note to take part.

At dawn, we’ll make our way to the top of May Hill to celebrate the expansion that is possible when we dissolve our separation from nature.

We’ll break the fast with a vegetarian breakfast by the fire back at May Hill Farm. Here, there will be the opportunity to discuss the experience and explore the everyday ways in which we can use what we’ve learned to tune in and reconnect to our environment in our every day lives.

What to bring

Comfortable backpack
Good shoes
Sleeping bag
Torch
Appropriate clothing for the weather and
overnight stay in the forest

Agency Series: Ancient Wisdom For The Modern Agency

With Katie Brindle

Think Chinese medicine is all acupuncture and herbs? If so, then think again…

Yang sheng is a huge part of Chinese medicine and a self-healing system which is over 5000 years old. It directly translates as ‘nourish life’ and is a self-healing system of simple methods which can easily be done before you leave for work, or at your desk. They are quick to learn and will put you back in the driving seat of good health. All in all, it’s a definitive health solution you never knew existed. This workshop is aimed specifically at marketing agency staff and is based on Katie Brindle’s best-selling book, Yang sheng – the art of Chinese self-healing.

What is it & how will it help?

Agency work is fast-paced and knowledge-based, so preserving your emotional health is paramount. And because it works very much with an ‘always on’ culture, the pressure can be immense in an environment dictated by budgetary restraints, constant deadlines, on-demand creativity and calculated risks.

Learning the simple techniques of yang sheng will dramatically improve your energy, boost your mood and restore your balance and calm. It’s about more than de-stressing. It’s about keeping your body and mind well, to stop you getting sick in the first place.  Chinese medicine is ancient, yet more relevant today than ever. Life has evolved, but the mechanisms of our body haven’t really changed.

Despite having such ancient roots, this yang sheng workshop deals with the very modern challenges of a career in marketing – from stress to sleeplessness and anxiety to poor digestion. That’s because it’s based on a holistic and sophisticated understanding of how we function and how our mental and physical health are intimately connected.

We’ll teach you how to safeguard mental health in your agency by equipping you with a simple, yet hugely effective coping strategies. You’ll learn how to carve out minutes during the work day to calm your nervous system and instantly switch your mind off for quick, yet effective re-boots. These techniques are not only powerfully effective, they’re fun and soothing, too.

During this workshop, acclaimed practitioner of Chinese medicine Katie Brindle will reveal ground-breaking techniques to transform the way you look after your agency staff’s health. We’ll teach you daily rituals that are as quick and simple as brushing your teeth. They fit perfectly into a hectic schedule, enabling you to deal with stress as it happens, rather than letting it build up in the body.

The Yang sheng techniques you’ll learn will help:

*Boost your energy levels
*Calm your nervous system
*Restore balance
*Reduce stress
*Relax and rejuvenate

Some of the techniques will be new to you, some may seem unusual, some you will instantly love. But they are all simple to learn and quick to do. This experience can be delivered from a 2 hour workshop to a day-long masterclass with qigong and gua sha experts, fully tailored to your requirements. You’ll have access to ongoing support as well: in the form of tools, online clinics and live feeds.

A drop of prevention is better than a bucket load of cure.’

Ancient Chinese proverb

Agency Series: Overcoming Imposter Syndrome

With Jenny Garrett

Ever felt like a fraud at the agency? You’re not alone and it’s more common than you think. Over 70% of people have experienced the feeling of being a fake at one time in their life. Take these quotes for example

You think, “Why would anyone want to see me again in a movie? And I don’t know how to act anyway, so why am I doing this?

– Meryl Streep

The philosopher Bertrand Russell wrote:

The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, and wiser people so full of doubts

The vast array of problems we face as human beings require the best people to step up. But many hold back because they feel that luck, rather than ability, lies behind their successes. They dread that one day, some person or event will expose them for the fraud that deep down they believe themselves to be. This often gets worse around pitch time. Far from being a realistic self-assessment, the impostor syndrome mind-trap prevents people from believing in themselves, to the detriment of us all.

When I was younger, I just did it. I just acted. It was just there. So now when I receive recognition for my acting, I feel incredibly uncomfortable. I tend to turn in on myself. I feel like an impostor. It was just something I did.

– Emma Watson

Session Outline

Have you had that nagging feeling that you’ll be found out, or are you waiting to feel more confident before you realise your ambitions? In this interactive session, delivered as 1.5 hour workshop (and can also be run for a longer durations if required), we’ll dive into uncovering the keys to confidence and overcoming imposter syndrome. You will uncover what drives you, learn how to identify, challenge and replace unhelpful limiting thoughts and beliefs and be introduced to the concept of imposter syndrome. You’ll come away with new strategies, tools and an action plan and uncover an altogether more confident you.

In a 1.5 hour session specific to marketing agencies we’ll cover:

  • Introduction to the session and a definition of imposter syndrome, with an explanation of the difference between a healthy self-image and imposter syndrome.
  • An ice breaker focused on building confidence and relaxing into the session so everyone feels comfortable
  • Imposter Syndrome – a self assessment quiz and group discussion
  • Sharing examples of imposter syndrome – TEDx video and discussion or, if possible, we encourage senior staff from the organisation to share their personal experience of imposter syndrome including some questions and answers
  • Building on the pre-work we’ve done, you’ll be introduced to the unconscious inner divers that could be fuelling your imposter syndrome
  • Learn how to identify, challenge, and replace unhelpful thoughts and beliefs
  • Introduction to the REBT tool and practice in pairs to counter imposter syndrome
  • Action planning and take aways

When I won the Oscar, I thought it was a fluke. I thought everybody would find out, and they’d take it back. They’d come to my house, knocking on the door, “Excuse me, we meant to give that to someone else. That was going to Meryl Streep” – Jodie Foster

Creative Agency Series: Good For Life

With The Life Adventure

We live in a time of great unravelling. Weavers are needed. That means you.

Creative and marketing professionals have never had a more vital role to play than now, as humanity chooses its pathway for the future. In the last month, the Bank of England and the UK’s largest investment fund, Legal & General, alongside David Attenborough, countless environmental NGOs and the B Corp movement have called for businesses to rapidly adapt pretty much everything they do, or to prepare for failure. Countries, councils and businesses are declaring climate and biodiversity emergencies.

Whether we are able to reduce carbon emissions fast enough, restore biodiversity and transform our food systems depends not on technology, but story. We already have the know-how to fix the biggest challenges of our time, but lack the will, the reason and desire for transformation. Making that shift, the greatest of our times, depends on creative teams being at their very best, physically and mentally resilient, and ready for the graft that will underpin the best work they’ve ever delivered.

Creating campaigns, projects and programmes that help clients engage effectively in a rapid journey towards a resilient future means letting go of the suffering, doubt and anguish that comes with many of the emotional and physical wellbeing struggles that shape people’s lives. Imagining the creative work that connects audiences’ heads, hearts and actions to the brands that they love, and to a future that we can be proud of building means reconnecting to ourselves, to the people around us and to nature.

Bringing new economies, cultures and technologies to life, to replace the current set that are fraying the very fabric of the world as we know it, will require a level of courage, collaboration and persistence that is new to many. We may not be equipped with the right tools, yet we need to be ready for the rapid shifts that must start within the next couple of years, at the most.

Good for Life is a powerful, life-affirming 3-day experience that helps creative industry professionals prepare mind, body & soul for a world on the edge of chaos. It’s a supercharge of inspiration and insight for leaders and owners of progressive creative agencies who know that transformational change is coming soon for them and their clients.

The programme will enrich an individual and teams’ capability to make epic contributions with sharper skills and stories to build a better life for all. In this incredible journey of personal transformation, we help participants focus what they do to what they really care about by using adventure, experiential learning, reflection and discussion to connect to self, each other, land, sea and nature.  You’ll walk away with a passport, compass and map to live more fully, actively and consciously both now and in the future, and the ability to bring that gift back into the teams and clients you work with.

Location, accommodation & what you’ll be doing

The backdrop to Good for Life is the incredible landscape, heritage and welcome of St David’s in Pembrokeshire, West Wales, the UK’s smallest city where land meets sea. We can arrange transport to get you there, or you can arrive under your own steam.

You have choice of accommodation that ranges from nearly wild camping, glamping, self-catering or country house hotel, with incredible local food and ingredients grown within a couple of miles. Wherever the stay, the stunning Pembrokeshire coast is a perfect, memorable classroom for these three days.
We’ve lined up an incredible pick-and-choose of life skill adventures. They’re a kind of super-sized scouting for 21st century grown-ups. Each team we work with can choose pretty much any combination from the options below to form the foundations of their Good for Life experience and connect their learning back into their work and life at the agency.

You work in brand and marketing because it’s about energy, creativity and communication – things that matter personally, that wake you up and make you feel engaged. You love it when you get a chance to bring new life to a brand or create a powerful idea to catalyse change. But all too often the inspiration goes missing in action, sidelined or forgotten in a rush to create something that is acceptable to the client, internally or externally. In this event Laurence – based on 20 years experience as a strategist, entrepreneur and author – will reconnect you with what really matters about marketing: the generation of inspiring energy that attracts and mobilises your community of customers and colleagues.

This workshop can be tailored either for individuals wishing to explore their career future or for teams working on a specific problem or looking to make inspiration a central principle of their work. It can be held in your offices or we can talk you on a Walkshop out into the Sussex countryside (thoroughly recommended) or in inspiring locations around London.

We will look at:
  • Managing a high-performing creative team
  • Getting to flow in discussions and decision-making
  • How to generate insights to unblock a problem
  • Where good ideas come from and how to generate them
  • Influence and power in marketing

Marketing Agency Series: Talk It Out

With Chris Barez-Brown

The fastest, simplest way to boost your mental wellbeing.

This world is getting better and better, worse and worse, faster and faster than ever before. Our mental well-being is under threat and unless we learn to master a brain that is not designed for today; we could all be in serious trouble.

One in four people around the globe will experience some form of mental illness every year. The cost to our planet hits the trillion mark annually and with around 450 million people currently suffering with mental health related conditions it is one of the leading burdens to our healthcare system. Yet, according to the World Health Organisation, nearly two thirds of people never seek help, as the stigma that still exists around the illness is very much alive and kicking.

There are many reasons for this epidemic taking grip but one that is deeply evident is the demise of face-to-face conversation and a lack of awareness or openness about the things that are most important to us.

Malcolm Gladwell’s book Outliers opens with the story of a community, the Rosetans of Roseto, Penn, that seem to be vastly healthier and happier than their neighbours. Studies revealed that what made them so healthy and happy wasn’t down to food, exercise or wealth. It was the quality of their social network. They talked to people in their community every day. It was part of their day to day living; they had better lives because they took the time to talk and to listen, building deeper and more meaningful relationships as a result.

Our individualistic and technology driven landscape, exciting as it is, means we don’t talk as often. Not to real people. And the lack of, is ultimately having a detrimental effect upon our mental wellbeing.

If we don’t talk, we are essentially alone and loneliness has been proven time and again to make us unhappy. At any given time, more than one in five Americans will report that they have feelings of loneliness. A recent Finnish study showed that people of working age who live alone increase their risk of depression by up to 80%. We have lost our shine.

‘Talk It Out’ is a super simple, fun, fast, human exercise Chris created a number of years ago. He is not a mental health professional. He has simply learnt what works through the experience of training many people across many brands and agencies around the world. We also don’t claim it to be the finite answer to the complex mental health problem. What we do know is that it can help our mental wellbeing in agency life. A lot.

Why Talk it Out?

We know how to look after our bodies by eating well and exercising, yet very few of us invest in looking after our minds. Our brain is a muscle, like any others in our body, that needs to be taken care of. Talk it Out gives us the space to do just that. It is the fastest way to process complex situations and gain clarity, energy and inspiration and release our bottled-up emotions.

When we walk and talk, we access more of our subconscious and therefore much of our unseen challenges, frustrations and untapped passions come out into the light of day from the shadows of our more unconscious processing. For every opportunity that we have, we have a story. The story is our take on a situation, the one we keep coming back to time and time again. The one that keeps us stuck in today.

Just by sharing in a stream of consciousness we can change our whole relationship with what has literally been “on our minds”

Chris has run this technique with tens of thousands of people in agencies and brands (and beyond) and has researched it with Bristol University in the UK where they found that 85% of people felt better after Talk it Out.

Chris is passionate about using the technique to help people in agencies process complex situations they face on a daily basis and gain clarity, energy and inspiration through the power of authentic conversations.

Give it a try and see how you feel after this incredible session …

Street Wisdom For Marketing Agencies

With Justine Clement

The Street Wisdom activity had the biggest impact on me. Embracing the idea and actually slowing down enough to notice the world was something that opened my mind quite a bit. I can safely say that I know what I want now.” D&AD New Blood Academy participant

What’s it about?

Street Wisdom is a powerful, innovative tool that helps reboot thinking, set new directions, unlock ideas and help you find answers when life is looking a little difficult. It’s an immersive walking workshop that teaches you to use city streets to find fresh answers to the questions on your mind. Street Wisdom is already a global social enterprise popular in over 30 countries with powerful applications to help your agency.  You’ll be joining other forward-thinking organisations such as Ogilvy, FT, Google & Samsung who have already tried it and loved it.

A growing number of agencies are waking up to Street Wisdom as a fresh new way to:

  • Crack problems
  • Inspire people
  • Unleash Creativity
  • Develop collaboration
  • Boost well-being
  • Connect with the community
  • Enhance personal development
What is it?

Street Wisdom is a global social enterprise with a mission to bring inspiration to every street on earth. It’s a technology that allows you to get unusual inspiration from your everyday surroundings. As fully trained-up Street Wizards, we’ll give you the skills to access the ‘invisible university’ that’s all around you on the streets and help you as individuals, or teams, to find fresh answers to personal or work-related questions – with profound results.

Why the streets?

Because they are many and varied. They are free to use. They are where we spend an increasing amount of our metropolitan lives. And they are a rich source of untapped wisdom. It turns out, you don’t need an exotic getaway to find inspiration, it’s right outside your door. And you won’t burn a tonne of fossil fuel getting there.

How can you experience it?

Street Wisdom is a generally run as a three-hour workshop, although our team will create a bespoke experience for your agency. Plenty of individuals use Street Wisdom to solve their business problems, now, entire businesses are doing the same.

It’s an innovative and sustainable way to:

  • Inspire your people and give them a way to inspire themselves
  • Find new ways around problems
  • Collectively set a new direction
  • Improve wellbeing
  • Connect you better with your community and customers
How does it work?

It’s very simple – that’s because the process has been refined for years.

Tune Up. Quest. Share.

1. First, our street guide helps you and your group tune up your senses so you can pick up much more information from the urban environment that you would normally.
2. Then you’re off on a journey by yourself – your street quest – where you ask a question and see what answers present themselves.
3. Finally, you gather together again to share what happened and, more often than not, wonder at how magical an ordinary street can become when you’re really aware of those hidden messages, chance meetings and unexpected discoveries.

Who came up with the idea?

Founder David Pearl is an internationally renowned speaker who specialises in igniting creativity and changing working cultures. With expert facilitators based around the UK, we can work at scale. Our toolkit and bespoke training sessions give in-house facilitators the ability to roll out Street Wisdom within an entire workplace – inspiring whole companies to use the streets as a source of new ideas.

What about the results?

In just three hours of walking and wandering, participants have resolved problems that have dogged them for years, found new business ideas, discovered new directions, and learned how to deal differently with living, learning and loving.

Street Wisdom by The Life Adventure is ideally run for around 8-10 people, but get in touch here or call Justine on 07714 333418 to discuss.

It’s such a fascinating experience so if you’d like some further reading on it see this review on Street Wisdom by The Times.

Tackle Your Inner Critic: Increase Your Confidence In Work And Life For Marketing Agency Staff

With Fiona Buckland
Learn how to lessen the power of your inner critic, feel more confident and fulfil your potential in agency life

Most of us are guilty of being harder on ourselves than we are on others. What our inner critic tells us about our progress and worth are things we would never say to a friend – and this can have devastating effects on our personal and professional development. We are living in an epidemic of self-criticism; nearly everyone suffers with it, no matter how successful and this is particularly so in the demanding environment of agency life.

To fulfil your potential within the agency and realise your self-worth, you will need to tackle your inner critic – but this can be a daunting task. So how do you shut off that negative voice?

Enter leading life coach Fiona Buckland, who has worked with organisations including the United Nations, Google and many more.  She will show you how to break the vicious cycle of self-doubt and setbacks, providing you with skills and techniques that you can integrate into your everyday life.

You will come away feeling confident in your abilities to reduce the power of your inner critic, diminish negative self-talk, and with an increased connection to those inner resources that energise and inspire you into positive action – even in challenging times. You will also learn how to be more present, to notice your habits of negative thinking, and how to take action with courage and compassion so that you can be more positive, effective, resilient and successful in every aspect of your life.

In this session you’ll learn:
  • Why we can often be so self-critical and out-of-touch with our ability to feel confident
  • How to develop greater confidence through self-awareness
  • Noticing negative thoughts and taking action to reduce them
  • Tuning your confidence through understanding what you stand for
  • How to reduce tendencies to avoid uncomfortable situations and thoughts
  • Spotting and reducing self-sabotage
  • Increasing resilience

This session is best run over 3 hours, but we can adjust the content to suit your timings. We thoroughly recommend going out of the agency to learn in a new environment and can arrange this, otherwise we’ll come to you.

Please contact us at hello@thelifeadventure.co for pricing according to your agency’s requirements, and any more details you may require on this session.

Presenter Danny Shmulevitch

Danny’s search for stillness began as a young child growing up in the Sinai desert. He lived with the semi-nomadic Sawad tribe near his family home in Galilee; his formative years spent sleeping fireside under the stars - free from the physical and human confines most of us accept as our reality. For over two decades, Danny worked with the Bedouin tribes to lead retreats and longer journeys in the Sinai desert. They were attended by ecological and spiritual leaders and other people who came to witness how we expand when we connect deeply with ourselves in nature. He set up the The Makhad Trust in 2002 to support the preservation of the natural heritage of the Bedouin and other nomadic communities of the world. He also led the restoration of oasis gardens throughout the Sinai region and built community wells, as well as a school. In the remote Amdo region of Tibet, he worked with indigenous communities to restore the murals in the Lukhang garden, built by Dalai Lama VI in the 17th century, and the Mani Walls near the Terton Chogar Monastery.

After a car accident ended her dreams of becoming an opera singer, she was eventually healed by Chinese medicine. Indeed, she was so inspired that Katie decided to train as a practitioner. Her mission in life became to help others using the remarkable healing system of yang sheng, the self-care part of Chinese medicine. Whilst Western medicine has transformed health care as we know it, there’s a gap that it doesn’t address and that’s the ‘almost-well’, the ‘not feeling so good’, the tired out and over-stressed. This is a gap she has seen Chinese medicine – specifically yang sheng – fill beautifully. She founded the award-winning Hayo’u Method and published her best-selling book: both of which distil ancient Chinese medicine techniques into simple daily rituals. Katie has been working in Chinese medicine since 2002. Alongside practising massage and reflexology, she studied TCM and qualified as a Five Elements Chinese medical practitioner, graduating from the UK’s Integrated College of Chinese Medicine. She’s now committed to increasing awareness of this ancient wisdom and encouraging people to master their own health. Her aim is to make Chinese medicine achievable and accessible. And as habitual as brushing your teeth.

Presenter Dr Shomit Mitter

Shomit comes from an intellectual perspective, with a M.Phil from Oxford University and a Ph.D from Cambridge University. He trained as a hypnotherapist under Dr. Keith Hearne and Dr. Roger Woolger, and has spent 30 years studying ancient Indian, Chinese, Egyptian and Shamanic systems of healing. Much of his work over the years has involved an amalgamation of these systems with cutting edge modern western hypnotherapy. The results are both powerful and easy to use. If you get the chance to enroll in some of his mind-blowing workshops, take it. The meditations are some of the most powerful we’ve ever experienced and the stories of his mother’s friendship with Mother Teresa remind you that you’re in the presence of a unique individual who’s giving you a unique insight into the world. If you ever need reminding that the world is a stage and we are merely actors taking up our roles, then best let Shomitt lead you through it, with intelligence, awe and finesse.
