Active Listening

With Colin D Smith

“I wonder how many people I have heard in all my life and not listened to them”   John Steinbeck

Introduction

There is an irony in even talking about listening, after all, it is something we all do, right?  Most people would react to this by saying that there is nothing more they need to know. Yet, they would probably struggle to think of someone who listens to them very well.  Whilst it is recognised that being an active listener is crucial for building relationships and communicating effectively, research shows that 94% of us simply hear what others are saying and only 6% actively listen. We spend years learning to read, write and speak, yet little, if any, time is given to listening – our most used communication medium.  In a recent study by Korn Ferry, (a Global coaching company), developing ‘listening and empathy skills’ was either the first or second most sought after skill for coaching with CEOs, Senior Managers and Junior Managers.

Agency Series: Ancient Wisdom For The Modern Agency

With Katie Brindle

Think Chinese medicine is all acupuncture and herbs? If so, then think again…

Yang sheng is a huge part of Chinese medicine and a self-healing system which is over 5000 years old. It directly translates as ‘nourish life’ and is a self-healing system of simple methods which can easily be done before you leave for work, or at your desk. They are quick to learn and will put you back in the driving seat of good health. All in all, it’s a definitive health solution you never knew existed. This workshop is aimed specifically at marketing agency staff and is based on Katie Brindle’s best-selling book, Yang sheng – the art of Chinese self-healing.

What is it & how will it help?

Agency work is fast-paced and knowledge-based, so preserving your emotional health is paramount. And because it works very much with an ‘always on’ culture, the pressure can be immense in an environment dictated by budgetary restraints, constant deadlines, on-demand creativity and calculated risks.

Learning the simple techniques of yang sheng will dramatically improve your energy, boost your mood and restore your balance and calm. It’s about more than de-stressing. It’s about keeping your body and mind well, to stop you getting sick in the first place.  Chinese medicine is ancient, yet more relevant today than ever. Life has evolved, but the mechanisms of our body haven’t really changed.

Despite having such ancient roots, this yang sheng workshop deals with the very modern challenges of a career in marketing – from stress to sleeplessness and anxiety to poor digestion. That’s because it’s based on a holistic and sophisticated understanding of how we function and how our mental and physical health are intimately connected.

We’ll teach you how to safeguard mental health in your agency by equipping you with a simple, yet hugely effective coping strategies. You’ll learn how to carve out minutes during the work day to calm your nervous system and instantly switch your mind off for quick, yet effective re-boots. These techniques are not only powerfully effective, they’re fun and soothing, too.

During this workshop, acclaimed practitioner of Chinese medicine Katie Brindle will reveal ground-breaking techniques to transform the way you look after your agency staff’s health. We’ll teach you daily rituals that are as quick and simple as brushing your teeth. They fit perfectly into a hectic schedule, enabling you to deal with stress as it happens, rather than letting it build up in the body.

The Yang sheng techniques you’ll learn will help:

*Boost your energy levels
*Calm your nervous system
*Restore balance
*Reduce stress
*Relax and rejuvenate

Some of the techniques will be new to you, some may seem unusual, some you will instantly love. But they are all simple to learn and quick to do. This experience can be delivered from a 2 hour workshop to a day-long masterclass with qigong and gua sha experts, fully tailored to your requirements. You’ll have access to ongoing support as well: in the form of tools, online clinics and live feeds.

A drop of prevention is better than a bucket load of cure.’

Agency Series: Overcoming Imposter Syndrome

With Jenny Garrett

Ever felt like a fraud at the agency? You’re not alone and it’s more common than you think. Over 70% of people have experienced the feeling of being a fake at one time in their life. Take these quotes for example

You think, “Why would anyone want to see me again in a movie? And I don’t know how to act anyway, so why am I doing this?

– Meryl Streep

The philosopher Bertrand Russell wrote:

The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, and wiser people so full of doubts

The vast array of problems we face as human beings require the best people to step up. But many hold back because they feel that luck, rather than ability, lies behind their successes. They dread that one day, some person or event will expose them for the fraud that deep down they believe themselves to be. This often gets worse around pitch time. Far from being a realistic self-assessment, the impostor syndrome mind-trap prevents people from believing in themselves, to the detriment of us all.

When I was younger, I just did it. I just acted. It was just there. So now when I receive recognition for my acting, I feel incredibly uncomfortable. I tend to turn in on myself. I feel like an impostor. It was just something I did.

– Emma Watson

Session Outline

Have you had that nagging feeling that you’ll be found out, or are you waiting to feel more confident before you realise your ambitions? In this interactive session, delivered as 1.5 hour workshop (and can also be run for a longer durations if required), we’ll dive into uncovering the keys to confidence and overcoming imposter syndrome. You will uncover what drives you, learn how to identify, challenge and replace unhelpful limiting thoughts and beliefs and be introduced to the concept of imposter syndrome. You’ll come away with new strategies, tools and an action plan and uncover an altogether more confident you.

In a 1.5 hour session specific to marketing agencies we’ll cover:

  • Introduction to the session and a definition of imposter syndrome, with an explanation of the difference between a healthy self-image and imposter syndrome.
  • An ice breaker focused on building confidence and relaxing into the session so everyone feels comfortable
  • Imposter Syndrome – a self assessment quiz and group discussion
  • Sharing examples of imposter syndrome – TEDx video and discussion or, if possible, we encourage senior staff from the organisation to share their personal experience of imposter syndrome including some questions and answers
  • Building on the pre-work we’ve done, you’ll be introduced to the unconscious inner divers that could be fuelling your imposter syndrome
  • Learn how to identify, challenge, and replace unhelpful thoughts and beliefs
  • Introduction to the REBT tool and practice in pairs to counter imposter syndrome
  • Action planning and take aways

When I won the Oscar, I thought it was a fluke. I thought everybody would find out, and they’d take it back. They’d come to my house, knocking on the door, “Excuse me, we meant to give that to someone else. That was going to Meryl Streep” – Jodie Foster

Ancient Wisdom For A Modern Workplace

With Katie Brindle

Always considered Chinese medicine was just acupuncture and herbs? If so, then think again…

This workshop has been created specifically for our business series and is based on the best-selling new book Yang sheng – the art of Chinese self-healing.  And despite being thousands of years old, it’s hugely relevant to people today in the modern workplace. Why? Because it has an incredibly sophisticated understanding of how your body works and offers a vast array of phenomenally powerful every day self-healing techniques which you can easily use to help alleviate stress whilst at work.

What is it & how will it help?

Life has undoubtedly evolved.  But the mechanisms of our body haven’t really changed over thousands of years and despite having such ancient roots, yang sheng helps us deal with the challenges of modern life – from stress to sleeplessness and anxiety to poor digestion. That’s because it’s based on a holistic and sophisticated understanding of how we function – and how our mental and physical health are intimately connected.

Little-known in the West, and even in modern-day China, Yang sheng is a 5000 year old self-healing system with proven, ancient methods that help us deal with modern day life. We believe it’s actually the definitive preventative health solution that most of us never even knew existed.

Consider this

Are you sleeping well? You may not be a hardcore insomniac, but do you wake up exhausted? You may not be sick, but are you on top form every day? Do you feel strong in yourself? Are you calm in stressful situation? Do you bounce out of bed each morning, ready for action? Sadly, the stresses of corporate life leaves most of us feeling under par at least some of the time.

Learning the simple techniques of yang sheng that we’ll teach you in this session will dramatically improve your energy, boost your mood and restore your balance and calm. It’s about more than de-stressing. It’s about understanding how to keep your body in such good condition that you won’t get ill in the first place.

During this workshop, acclaimed practitioner of Chinese medicine Katie Brindle will reveal ground-breaking techniques to transform the way you look after your health. You’ll learn daily rituals to use both at home and in the office which are as simple as brushing your teeth. They’ll fit perfectly into a hectic schedule of life and work, enabling you to deal with stress as it happens, rather than letting it build up in the body.

Awe & Wonder

With Francesco Dimitri

A sense of wonder has been the foundation of industry, art, and science: people as different as Einstein, Picasso, and Steve Jobs were guided by wonder.

The notion of this ties in with recent psychology studies which have demonstrated that learning to regain a sense of wonder makes us better at teamwork. But while wonder comes naturally to children, it becomes harder to hold on to it as we grow up.  When we lose our sense of wonder, we lose engagement with our work, becoming less effective, and more vulnerable to stress and anxiety.

Awe & Wonder can be delivered as a one hour talk or half/full day workshop for organisations and will help you reconnect with wonder in a work environment, bringing together the wisdom of adulthood with the fertile foolishness of childhood.

Francesco’s latest book on the subject, called ‘That Sense of Wonder’ is one of the best books we’ve ever read in a long time.

This can also be delivered as a live webinar by Zoom or similar platform.

Building Better Relationships

With Samantha Clarke

This can be delivered as a talk or we can create fully bespoke workshops and training programs for your organisation, if you are looking to resolve a specific challenge.

As individuals we may be highly brilliant, talented, witty and caring but few of us live or work in a vacuum; no one is an island. So it pays to learn how to cultivate and nurture relationships with others. Doing so can help us lead enriched and deeper lives, as well as be successful in the workplace.

Humans are social beings. We long to be understood, accepted and feel that we belong. However we are not born with natural relationship building abilities but like all skills it can be learned and mastered if we are willing to recognise the need and that this takes time and effort.

This session will showcase the tools to help build better relationships with everyone by:

  • revealing the key elements of healthy relationships
  • enhancing effective emotional communication and connection skills
  • providing insights on how to respond better to others
  • identifying how to regulate conflict with others

Connected Breath Session For Organisations

With Justine Clement

My breathwork session with Justine was just incredible! A truly amazing experience that has made a profound difference to how I feel – like a huge weight has been lifted from me. I instantly connected with Justine. Her expertise and genuine passion to help others was very evident. I felt safe, relaxed and really comfortable to just ‘let go’ and be myself. I highly recommend anyone to just give Connected Breathwork a go, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. I will definitely be booking more sessions as I can feel a real shift after just one. Gail Blackman.

What is Connected Breathwork?

Humans have been aware of the healing power of their breath for millennia. Through the centuries we’ve developed a vast array of breathing practices, all designed to bring about physical and emotional wellbeing and connect with our deeper selves. But in today’s society, we often neglect our bodies’ built-in capabilities. Imagine owning the most high specification TV in existence, keeping it plugged in on standby and then living with it for years and years without ever actually turning it on. The fact is, most of us live in ‘standby mode’ most of the time. Breath: the most powerful mechanism is literally right beneath our noses waiting to be explored, yet we rarely give it more than a passing thought.

Connected Breathing is a powerful and safe way to infuse the body with oxygen and energy, recharging our own (often depleted) systems to work to their healing capacity. It facilitates openings to higher levels of living and being, allowing us to tap into our deeper resources and live our lives joyfully and in abundance.

Breathwork helps you towards optimum mental health, emotional clarity and experience an ever-deepening relationship with yourself. It’s the means by which we can embark upon the ultimate journey: the one where we discover who we really are. It can also facilitate the growth needed in order for us to transform into who we’re capable of becoming.

What to expect

We run workshops in person in a studio, your office if there’s an appropriate space, or at present, virtually via Zoom and Google Teams. No previous experience is necessary. Breathwork is a benign and yet powerful modality with few contraindications. All you need for the session is yourself, dressed in comfy, loose clothing.

Justine will give a short introduction to the workings and benefits of Breathwork, followed by a demonstration of the technique. There’s plenty of opportunity to ask questions, then it’s into the breathing session. You’ll lie on your back (or for beginners we recommend you being in a slightly elevated position) and the whole group will breathe together online, guided by Justine, in the comfort of your own surroundings. During the session you will have your own very individual experience and no one will observe you other than your facilitator, Justine. Sensations of physical and/or emotional release are not uncommon. Most people experience an increasing sense of peace and wellbeing. Whatever your experience you can be sure that it’s just the beginning of an incredible journey. Welcome to the world of Connected Breathing!

The Science

Medical research into Connected Breathing and other such breathing therapies is still in its infancy although there are a number of ongoing studies exploring the relationship between Breathwork and heart disease, hypertension and mental/emotional states. The type of Connected Breathing that we teach involves a form of deep, circular, connected, diaphragmatic breathing (which is very different to yogic breathing/Pranayama). There are many variations of Breathwork (such as Transformational Breath, Holotropic Breath, Rebirthing which are all based on the “connected” breath) each with their own particular technique however all of the current research reports on the common benefits of continued slow, deep, diaphragmatic breathing. Click the links below for some of the available research:

Boost the immune system

Improve generalised anxiety, social anxiety, music performance anxiety and depression

Be effective in respiratory rehabilitation of COPD patients

Lower Blood Pressure

Reduce Chronic Back Pain

Allow access to divergent thinking; ‘the most important ingredient of creativity

Improve cognitive performance and reduce negative physiological consequences of stress

Benefits

  • Release anxiety, stress and alleviate depression
  • Tackle sleep issues
  • Ease respiratory conditions
  • Boost your immune system
  • Feel completely energised
  • Experience deeply nourishing peace and relaxation
  • Be the healthiest you’ve ever been
  • Become aware of emotions halting your personal growth
  • Let go of emotional baggage permanently and easily
  • Move beyond whatever is standing between you and your happiness

After the session

After a Breathwork session you may feel very light, more open, and even euphoric for a few days. However, it’s also possible you find yourself a little more emotional than normal, which is perfectly normal and ok.

You’ll want to drink lots of water after a session, that’s because you’ve brought a lot of toxins to the surface through your breathing, and water will help flush them out. In the days and weeks that follow, you may find you experience:

  • More self-confidence
  • Access to more creativity and clarity
  • A deeper sense of well-being
  • A stronger connection with yourself and others and people often find that those around them will also feel the effects, such as improved relationships

Developing Entrepreneurial Thinking In Organisations

With Elaine Gold

We hear about ‘Entrepreneurship’ all the time. In the past 10 years especially, the entrepreneur has achieved hero or mega-star status and increasingly young people are opting out of university (even those running entrepreneurship programmes) in order to work on their own or with friends to focus on ideas for a startup. Within organisations, the need to innovate, or seek new ‘disruptive technologies’ is now part of the mainstream way of doing business, with many collaboration programmes springing up between corporates and startups.

In this 2 hour session we will look at how we can incorporate entrepreneurial thinking into an organisational setting. We will cover:

• What we mean by ‘entrepreneurship’

• The challenge to innovate

• Entrepreneurship not entrepreneurs

• How to recognise entrepreneurship and develop it

• Creating a culture of innovation

Whilst this session is best delivered over 2 hours, it can be extended to a half or full day, if required. Contact us to discuss.

Presenter Katie Brindle

Katie has been on a long journey, from patient to acclaimed Chinese medicine practitioner, best-selling author and founder of the Hayo’u Method. After a car accident ended her dreams of becoming an opera singer, she was eventually healed by Chinese medicine. Indeed, she was so inspired that Katie decided to train as a practitioner. Her mission in life became to help others using the remarkable healing system of yang sheng, the self-care part of Chinese medicine. Whilst Western medicine has transformed health care as we know it, there’s a gap that it doesn’t address and that’s the ‘almost-well’, the ‘not feeling so good’, the tired out and over-stressed. This is a gap she has seen Chinese medicine – specifically yang sheng – fill beautifully. She founded the award-winning Hayo’u Method and published her best-selling book: both of which distil ancient Chinese medicine techniques into simple daily rituals. Katie has been working in Chinese medicine since 2002. Alongside practising massage and reflexology, she studied TCM and qualified as a Five Elements Chinese medical practitioner, graduating from the UK’s Integrated College of Chinese Medicine. She’s now committed to increasing awareness of this ancient wisdom and encouraging people to master their own health. Her aim is to make Chinese medicine achievable and accessible. And as habitual as brushing your teeth.

Presenter Colin D Smith

Colin D Smith is known as ‘The Listener'. He is one of the UK’s foremost listening skills specialists, working both with individuals, as well as for teams within organisations who want to be heard, think smarter, and transform their business and personal relationships through active listening. He has an innate ability to actively listen to people, enabling them to articulate their creative ideas, address their personal concerns, express their feelings more easily, and to achieve their personal, professional and life goals. Having had a varied and successful career in consultancy, business development, IT and customer support across many sectors, including finance, motor, retail and the NHS, in looking back he realised that much of his success was due to his listening and connecting abilities. This led him to develop a series of programmes to develop these skills in others, the importance of which organisations are now waking up to. His inquisitive and curious mind leads him to explore unusual, thought provoking, yet grounded observations and alternative approaches to business, people, systems, change and innovation.

Presenter Dr Shomit Mitter

Shomit comes from an intellectual perspective, with a M.Phil from Oxford University and a Ph.D from Cambridge University. He trained as a hypnotherapist under Dr. Keith Hearne and Dr. Roger Woolger, and has spent 30 years studying ancient Indian, Chinese, Egyptian and Shamanic systems of healing. Much of his work over the years has involved an amalgamation of these systems with cutting edge modern western hypnotherapy. The results are both powerful and easy to use. If you get the chance to enroll in some of his mind-blowing workshops, take it. The meditations are some of the most powerful we’ve ever experienced and the stories of his mother’s friendship with Mother Teresa remind you that you’re in the presence of a unique individual who’s giving you a unique insight into the world. If you ever need reminding that the world is a stage and we are merely actors taking up our roles, then best let Shomitt lead you through it, with intelligence, awe and finesse.
