Learn To Breathe Workshops

With Alan Dolan
Why do you need to learn to breathe properly?

Have you ever watched a small child at play? Completely absorbed in the moment and totally unselfconscious. Perfect authenticity. No facades. Simply being. It’s a great reminder of our inherent ability to live this way. So when did we lose that ability and how do we get back there?

From a very early age we are taught how NOT to be authentic. Parents give children signals as to what is ‘ok’ and ‘not-ok’, and children adopt strategies in order to regain approval. For children, non-authentic behaviour has a short term gain. Over time however it becomes the norm, leading us further and further away from who we really are.

Our relationships with others, both inside and outside the workplace, are a direct reflection of the one we have with ourselves. You can’t hope to connect with others if we can’t connect to ourselves. If you’re looking for authenticity you need to be authentic with yourself. If you want respect from others at work, you need to be respectful with yourself. If you’d like to see through the facades of others you must get behind your own facade first.

Breathwork is your ticket back to the remembrance of your authentic self, a journey which can open you further than you ever imagined possible. It’s the best 2hrs you will ever spend.  Learning to breathe properly allows you to lighten up, and realise that you are already ok as you are. The facade you’ve spent years constructing will simply fall away as you begin to practice what you have learned in this session. You can disengage from the drama, find your centre, find joy – and consciously create a life you are happy to be a part of.

The Power of Breath

Humans have been aware of the healing power of their breath for millennia. Through the centuries we’ve developed a vast array of breathing practices, all designed to bring about physical and emotional wellbeing and connect with ourselves.

But in today’s society, we often neglect our bodies’ built-in capabilities. Imagine owning the highest specification TV in existence, keeping it plugged in on standby and then living with it for years and years without ever actually turning it on. The fact is, most of us live in ‘standby mode’ most of the time. The most powerful mechanism is literally right beneath our noses waiting to be explored, yet we rarely give it more than a passing thought.

Learning to breathe is a powerful and safe way to infuse the body with oxygen and energy, recharging our own (often depleted) systems to work to their healing capacity. And it facilitates openings in us which allow us to tap into our deeper resources and live better, easier, more joyful lives.

This breathwork session can help you back to optimum health, mental and emotional clarity and experience a better relationship with ourselves and the people we work alongside. It can facilitate the growth we need in order for us to transform into who we’re capable of becoming.

What you’ll gain from this session and further self-practice
  • Learn a technique which, if practised, will help you become the healthiest you’ve ever been
  • Feel completely energised
  • Experience deeply nourishing peace and relaxation
  • Move beyond whatever is standing between you and happiness
  • Become aware of emotions halting your personal growth
  • Let go of emotional baggage permanently and easily
  • Release anxiety and alleviate depression
The Technique

Alan Dolan’s work is based around years of exploring the most beneficial breathing techniques available to us. You’ll be taught how to use breathing effectively and be guided and supervised as you go along – paving the way for really transformative experiences.

What’s included

A 2-hr group breathwork session with an appropriate number of facilitators who will work alongside Alan to assist you.

Menopause Empowerment

With Akcelina Cvijetic

This masterclass is designed for women who are interested in discovering how to transform their current experience of perimenopause and menopause into greater personal and professional power.

Menopause is a transformative part of a woman’s life that can lead to greater awareness and empowerment, both in and out of the workplace. It is one of the most commonly neglected and yet crucial areas of overall female wellbeing that needs to be addressed.

Session Outline

Menopause is marked by complex hormonal changes that have a serious impact on our female body as well as our mental and emotional health. It is characterised by multiple symptoms: hot flushes, weight gain, fatigue, insomnia, memory loss, mood swings and low libido, to mention but a few.

In this session, we will unravel not just the most debilitating aspects, but also the ones that cause a silent yet deep suffering. We shall explore the importance of a hormonal balance, as well as nutritional support and management of our mental-emotional needs. One of the most commonly neglected and yet crucial areas of overall wellness are the emotions that arise around the time of menopause. The main ones include: anger, resentment, frustration, feeling devalued, sad and out of control. Menopause brings a sense of loss with regards to our youth, femininity, beauty, the “empty nest” syndrome, divorce or even death of our partner. As a result, we can experience deep grief and depression during this time.

In this interactive session, which can be delivered in anything from a 1 or 2 hour masterclass, to half a day or whole day workshop, you will come away with an uplifting perspective and effective solutions on how to feel better and sail through this transformative time.

In this masterclass/workshop you will find out learn:
  • Well-known and less-known symptoms – the impact on our mind, body and spirit and how to deal with it
  • Shift from “others-focus” to “self-focus”
  • Hormonal (im)balance – the best tests and remedies to balance your hormones, moods and emotions
  • Nutritional implications and advice – dietary enemies to avoid and nutritional friends to include as well as helpful supplements
  • The emotional rollercoaster and its management – understanding a myriad of emotions that arise at this time and how to process them in a healthy way
  • Menopause redefinition can be a powerful tool to redefine our midlife as a golden bridge to our golden age – to expand our definition of ourselves and our world for a more fulfilling life
  • Effective solutions for greater menopause experience and empowerment

Menopause’s ultimate invitation is not to be defined by who we no longer are, but who we are and to make the rest of our life the best of our life. It is our rite of passage and a journey of personal alchemy and authenticity.

Nutrition for Performance and Wellbeing

With Suzy Walgate
This session can be delivered as a one hour overview or a series of sessions exploring the effects of different food, and drink on our performance and wellbeing.

Our bodies are miraculous machines that are designed to be fuelled and driven by the food we eat. Food is not just calories, it is medicine – some food is full of good energy medicine and some food is SO unhelpful that it actually robs us of energy while the body tries to process it.

As we deal with life’s many challenges – juggling work life with home life, we want to have a spring in our step, feel a zest for life, enthusiastic about our work, look good, slow down the ageing process, and be at the top of our game.

In this talk we will unravel some of the myths and the confusion that has developed around what we should (and shouldn’t) eat and learn some simple principles on eating for health and optimum performance.

Healthy eating does not need to be complicated or dull. You’ll learn how to make the best choices for your lunch box or what to choose in restaurants and cafes during your working day.  You’ll also learn how to manage your shopping and fridge for tasty nutritious options at home, which allow for a restful nights sleep, leaving you feeling energised in the morning and ready for the day.

Nutrition is foundational to health, and it’s in our hands.  With some simple guidance and a few small changes we’ll help you transform the health of your body and your mind.

Suzy gave a fascinating speech about wellbeing which included effective and fast stress management techniques, nutrition, yoga at the office desk and much more. Everyone was very impressed. Her presentation style was superb, engaging, energetic, and educational, and much of it has been put into practice already!”

AW, Financial Planning Manager at JCH Investment

Resilience for a VUCA World

With Dr Carole

Dr Carole Pemberton believes everyone deserves to have a working life that is satisfying, allows for success and does not drain them of their physical, emotional and mental energies. These are not ‘soft’ aspirational words they are conditions which are key to both the engagement of staff, and their ability to perform in high demand environments.

Carole has spent her working life, researching, writing, consulting and working with individuals and organisations on the challenges of living out careers in organisations. That involvement with individuals at every age and career stage from graduate entrant to CEO has given her recognised expertise in career management, executive coaching and resilience.

Her interest in resilience grew from working with leaders who had lost access to their own resilience because of the relentlessness of demands, or because of career setback. Clients have taught her that there is no sustained career success without resilience, and her research has shown her that:

1. We are all resilient
2. No one, no matter how successful, is resilient all of the time
3. Resilience is more than physical wellbeing (although it plays a part)

Her approach, starts from recognising the resilience strengths which we all bring to our lives and then considering how those strengths can be applied or undermined by the context in which the person is working. She looks to then fill gaps in resilience capability, so that the individual is able to operate with the flexibility and agility that is required in organisations who are working in contexts of complexity and uncertainty compounded by the need for speed.

Alongside her work as a coach, she is also Visiting Professor in Business Coaching at the University of Ulster. This means that she brings a strong evidence base to her work, and her skill is in translating what academic research discovers into its practical meaning in the workplace. She is the author of a number of books including Coaching to Solutions: A Guide to Performance Coaching for line managers and most recently Resilience.

We have a wide range of offerings in areas related to resilience with Carole, all of which are bespoke for your organisation and your needs.

Resilience for a VUCA World can be delivered as a talk, specially designed workshop, as part of a more extensive resilience training programme or as an element of a leadership development programme. It can additionally be offered to whole teams so that resilience at a team level can be explored.

Each of us has a resilience template. That template is part genetics, part childhood experience but largely learnt through dealing with the ups and downs of life. This session focuses on:

• Understanding what resilience is and its relevance to individual performance
• Developing an individual profile and considering its meaning for how the individual shows up at work as a leader or team member
• Strategies for developing resilience muscle that encompass physical, mental and emotional energies plus the energy that comes from purpose

The session combines the evidence from research with high performers with activities which lead to defining actions for building resilience muscle.

This can also be delivered as a live webinar by Zoom or similar platform.

Risk-taking for Change Makers

With Kamala Katbamna

We work in a climate that’s volatile, uncertain and complex. It’s also full of exciting possibilities – if you’re willing to take a risk. By developing courage and exercising our risk-taking ‘muscles’, we can begin to adapt to a new way of thinking and working. And by taking even more risks, we’ll start innovating faster and creating positive change within our organisations.

This fun and fast-paced session will help you experiment, learn fast and move forward with greater courage and resilience. The workshop will use singing and conducting to create a practical experience of risk and innovation, of leading and being led through change.

Together, you’ll learn a song in simple harmony. You’ll then have the excitement and challenge of leading an experiment using this song, engaging with constructive critique and being part of a group trying to interpret and respond to change. It’s an exciting challenge.

This hands-on, interactive session will help you:

  • Explore your personal relationship with risk
  • Strengthen your courage to innovate and experiment faster and more frequently
  • Give and get fast, relevant feedback on your own and colleagues’ ideas
  • Offer challenge and dissent constructively and in the moment
  • Learn practical tools to improve your resilience and help you take risks more sustainably

The session will close with practical actions to help you apply your learning back in the workplace. There are no solos, and you don’t need any musical experience to participate fully!

Praise for previous sessions:

We’re creatives, so our job is all about taking risks and innovating. But that doesn’t mean we always find it easy! Kamala really helped me understand my personal response to risk, and be bolder about the ideas I put into practice. I’m now more confident about trying out ideas faster and with more of a game plan. And I back it up with the breathing exercises to stay calm! Definitely recommended.” Participant, Risk-taking for Change Makers

and another..

The risk session was fantastic, and really different to other sessions I’ve tried. Kamala really knows her stuff, and quickly had us challenging ourselves and doing things we wouldn’t have dared to a few minutes before! The idea of singing was a bit scary to begin with, but it was actually a great leveller. And it really helped us draw on that feeling of “what will people think of me, what if it goes wrong, what if I make a fool of myself” when you try a new idea at work. The directness and honesty of feedback within the group was amazing. Being able to experiment, develop what works and ditch what doesn’t quickly and confidently is such an important skill. I’ve been able to take this learning back to work and share it with my team.”  Participant, Risk-taking for Change Makers

SHIATSU

With Matthew Leavey

Shiatsu is Japanese for finger pressure. This powerful treatment involves applying pressure on the meridians (energetic channels that run through all body parts) and working on the musculoskeletal system. The treatments awaken the body’s potential to heal itself. Shiatsu works on a deep and superficial level. Deep work induces a meditative state that encourages relaxation and reduces the effects of long-term stress, whilst superficial focuses on stretching and relaxing muscles, freeing up joints and realigning the spine. Regular sessions make a real difference to quality of life as well as preserving wellbeing and enhancing daily performance.

Shiatsu is available as a 60 min treatment for individuals at our centre in Surrey or as part of a programme for organisations. For the latter, please contact us to discuss.

Storytelling for Wellbeing at Work

With Preethi Nair

Our storyteller Preethi is a Harper Collins published author & has been described by the FT as “the storyteller who makes up the skills gap”.

Storytelling has the power to influence & change both individuals & organisations. It is an art form increasingly used to sell a concept, idea or set of values both internally & externally.

On this programme, which can be delivered in anything from a 2 hour to 1 day session with up to 50 people, we’ll explore the work of a storyteller & see how great stories are put together. You’ll learn about the tools they have at their disposable and then use these to put great stories together both in a group & individual context. You’ll come away with the skills of a storyteller along with a newfound creativity, a fresh innovative perspective and learn the power to influence through story.

This workshop can be taught across all levels from senior leaderships teams and down the line and can also be delivered as a live webinar by Zoom or similar platform.

The Art Of Having No Idea

With Laurence Shorter
One of our marvellous presenters, Laurence Shorter, author of The Lazy Guru’s Guide to Life, offers a thought-provoking and unique exploration on how to enhance team and individual performance in a world in flux.

The answer is right in front of us

We’re pretending we know what we’re doing…

When actually we have no idea.

We’re trying to achieve something that’s unclear.

So we ignore our feelings in order to do things…even when they don’t feel quite right, which is very inefficient!

It doesn’t have to be this way. Laurence shorter, leadership coach & comedian – author of ‘the optimist’ & ‘the lazy guru’s guide to life’ – will talk you through ways of being that are less stressful and radically more creative and efficient: we’ve called it The Art Of Having No Idea. In this session he’ll share his experience of navigating uncertainty by accepting failure & confusion, giving examples from his own life and his work with teams, leaders and entrepreneurs. You will leave with both insights and practical tools for change.  You’ll also learn:

Effort vs effortlessness
An inquiry into how good things really happen

Space & Inspiration
A live experience of creative space

Shoulds & Can’ts
Understanding what gets in the way of creativity

Insights for Action
How we fill space & how to create more of it
