The Caring Female Leader

With Justine Clement
A 28-day programme for women in positions of leadership
Background

A great leader is one who cares. A caring leader creates a culture of openness and inclusivity where difference is valued. They look after the physical and mental well-being of their staff, encouraging self-care and digital disconnection. However, before connecting with others, a leader must first look inwards, be self-aware, care for themselves, listen to themselves and have those difficult conversations with themselves. In essence, caring leadership starts with self-leadership.

In this 28 day programme we’ll look at 3 hugely powerful tools for self-connection. these are:

  • Journaling
  • Conscious Connected Breath
  • Nature Connection =  Self-Connection

Understanding and integrating each of these methods into your life has the potential for profound and lasting positive impact. We make learning to breathe, TO connect more deeply with who and what we are (nature) and becoming the author of your own story, simple to learn, amazing to experience and when integrated into your life, offers you the opportunity to radically change how you live and work.

Time commitment
  • 1 day intensive at Nower Wood private nature reserve, near Leatherhead, Surrey (other locations may be possible).
  • Weekly group check in by zoom x 3 90 mins sessions
  • Final group check in 90 mins on 28th day

Group size

This programme is run as an intimate, small group for 6 people – either as one team or across an agency/ organisation.

Connection To Self = The Authentic Leader: what we’ll be covering
  1. JOURNALING IS THE SUPERPOWER

The most amazing yet simplest of tools to connect you to yourself is journaling. If you establish a practice of journaling for at least 28 DAYS, it will change your life. Journaling connects you to your authentic self in a way that nothing else does. It allows you to cultivate humility and empathy for yourself first and then allows you the space to do that for others.

In this programme, you’ll learn the art of journaling – not just for wellbeing, but for innovative thinking. There are so many benefits to journaling. Here are some of the standouts:

  • Cultivates authenticity – acting as a mirror to ourselves.
  • It’s the quickest way to move from left brain logical thinking to right brain creative thinking where intuition, clarity and insight reside.
  • According to the National Science Foundation’s study in 2005, an average person has about 12,000 – 60,000 thoughts per day. Of those, 80% are negative and 95% are repetitive thoughts. That leaves a very small window for fresh thinking and creativity.
  • The practice of journaling gets all the unwanted thoughts out and onto the page and creates room for fresh thinking. Think of your creativity as a well and on the top of this well are dead leaves (old patterns of thinking). The practice of showing up and writing everyday gets rid of the detritus and allows you to access this well.
  • Various scientific studies show that journaling improves wellbeing, provides clarity and boosts happiness.

      2. CONSCIOUS CONNECTED BREATH IS A DETOX FOR EVERY LEVEL OF OUR BEING

Humans have been aware of the healing power of their breath for millennia. Through the centuries we’ve developed a vast array of breathing practices, all designed to bring about physical and emotional wellbeing and connect with our deeper selves.

But in today’s society, we often neglect our bodies’ built-in capabilities. Imagine owning the most high specification TV in existence, keeping it plugged in on standby and then living with it for years and years without ever actually turning it on. The fact is, most of us live in ‘standby mode’ most of the time. Breath – the most powerful mechanism is literally right beneath our noses waiting to be explored, yet we rarely give it more than a passing thought.

Conscious Connected Breathing is a powerful and safe way to infuse the body with oxygen and energy, recharging our own (often depleted) systems to work to their healing capacity. It facilitates openings to higher levels of consciousness, allowing us to tap into our deeper resources and live our lives joyfully and in abundance.

The quality of our breath provides a perfect mirror to the state of our inner world. When we are nervous or agitated our breath becomes short, erratic and at times non-existent. When our breath flows smoothly and calmly so does our experience of life. The benefits of regular breathwork are huge, here are just a few:

  • Boost your immune system
  • Feel completely energised
  • Experience deeply nourishing peace and relaxation
  • Be the healthiest you’ve ever been
  • Become aware of emotions halting your personal growth
  • Let go of emotional baggage permanently and easily
  • Move beyond whatever is standing between you and your growth and happiness

    3. NATURE CONNECTION = SELF-CONNECTION

Learning how to gently reconnect back to nature contains a subtle power – one that reminds us what and who we truly are, taking us back to the interconnectedness which surrounds and empowers us.

When we feel connected to people and places, we feel a sense of belonging and wholeness. We feel ourselves truly alive. Yet over thousands of years, human beings have gradually become mere onlookers. Bystanders, not just to the glory and wonder of the natural world, but also to ourselves, our lives and our understanding of our place in the world.

There seems to be a gentle, yet unmistakable awakening happening. An increased desire to get out into nature. And whether we realise it’s a pull to find our way back to what it is we have lost in ourselves or not, doesn’t matter. Most important is the shift.

Our belief is that in order to thrive, we need to reconnect with who and what we are – all of which is, and can be found in nature. Our specific focus here is the forest. We’ll introduce you to sensory and meditative invitations that will help you find your way back to an easier way of living. One where you intrinsically know and understand your place in the world and how your connection with nature will bring you back to wholeness, happiness and a thriving, well- balanced life. The range of scientifically-backed benefits of regular shrin-yoku practice include:

  • Balancing blood pressure
  • Lowering stress levels
  • Improving cardiovascular and metabolic health
  • Lowering blood-sugar levels
  • Improving concentration and memory
  • Increasing anti-cancer protein production
  • Improving pain thresholds
  • Improving energy levels
  • Boosting the immune system with an increase in the count of the body’s natural killer (NK) cells

Wake Up! Escape A Life On Autopilot (2 nights)

With Chris Barez-Brown
Background

With the demands that we have on our time and attention, it is no wonder that we find it tough to always be who we truly are. Just to survive, we have to socialise to the norms and make constant compromises just to ‘fit in’. Our habit loops take over. Before long, we have lost touch with what makes us special and unique.

Wake Up! is an app, a book and, in this case, a 2 night/2.5 day program that helps you step back from all the busyness and reconnect with who you are, what’s important to you and how you spend your time.

Working with dynamic learning and development consultancy Upping Your Elvis’ unique creative approaches, we help you become more conscious and aware, giving you the skills and confidence to stay on track and not let the world shape your daily experience for you. The Wake Up! Experience goes deeper than Wake Up! the book or app can ever go but is based on the same principles of escaping autopilot so we can all lead a more technicolor and extraordinary life.

It is held in idyllic surroundings in Lyme Regis, Dorset, and involves a full submersion into beautiful countryside, nutritious local food and the collaboration of like minded folk.

Brilliant for teams and individuals alike and ideal for anybody looking for a personal boost.  Also, undoubtedly good for anyone wishing to become a more accomplished and creative leader.

Who is it for?

Anyone who feels like they need time to have some fun, get their energy right and give attention very selfishly on themselves. It’s particularly suited to those who love creativity and surrounding themselves with beautiful nature.

Where is it held?

At Rhode Hill House, Lyme Regis, Dorset, the home of the Baréz-Brown family

What will we do?

This will be a creative immersion into your life. You will get a chance to play with your perspectives to help you connect with your passions and your unique talents, making sure that they show up every day.

You will also learn some pretty cool ways to ensure that every day counts, your energy is working well for you and that when you feel stuck, you have ways to get moving again.

Creative approaches are at the heart of this workshop so be prepared to throw yourself in. We won’t spend much time with clever models and learning frameworks; in fact none at all. The workshop is deeply experiential where you will go on a journey with like-minded folk and expand your understanding of what’s really possible. And whilst we do it, we’ll have a stomp along the sea, be fed the most nutritious food from the best chefs in Dorset (aka the River Café crew) and reconnect with what loving life is all about.

What Wake Up! The Experience will deliver
  •    Confidence – a renewed confidence in yourself
  •    Excitement –  passion and energy for your work and life
  •    Creativity – skills that you can use everyday to remain more conscious and aware
  •    Clarity – a clear plan of what needs to change for you to tap into your unique genius everyday
  •    Inspiration – about your world and the role you play in it
  •    Impact – you will be in the driving seat of your life both at work and at home

Wake Up! The Experience is available as a bespoke group event. Please contact us to discuss your requirements in detail.

Wilderness Leadership Trails – re-connecting man and nature

With The Life Adventure
Introduction

When you combine a magical location, an inspiring teacher and nourishing food, travel has an almost alchemical power to it. Special journeys can irrevocably change us and many of us at one time or another have experienced this shift.

Our vision is to help people live richer, more fulfilling lives. This occurs when we begin to increase our self-awareness, understand how to be more conscious citizens, improve our feelings of self-empathy and empathy towards others and experience living in harmony with each other and with nature.

The Wilderness Trail

“Wilderness is not a luxury but a necessity of the human spirit” ~ Edward Abbey

A trail is not a hike. It is not a safari. It is not a personal endurance test. A Wilderness Trail is a deeply profound experience that is very difficult to articulate. It is a chance to return to your natural habitat. A digital detox. A deep experience of our own connection to the natural world. A chance to re-wild yourself and get inspired by the rhythm of nature. Your experience is carefully facilitated by guides who are arguably the best in Africa. The food is beyond what you could imagine. An authentic Wilderness Trail is unlike any other experience. Those who have been on this trail return again and again. You simply have to experience it to fully understand the power it can have on you, your team and your relationships.

This wilderness trail was pioneered by Dr. Ian Player well over half a century ago. After all of this time, the principles, the experience and the purpose of these trails remain the same. It runs over five days with a few days either side organised for you in a hotel. You sleep under the stars. You experience some of Africa’s most wild and sacred places. But most importantly, the trail experience is about you, a personal journey into wilderness and yourself. This is an experience that inevitably creates environmentally conscious leaders and ambassadors for our wild spaces.

Developing Wild Leaders

Wilderness Leadership helps nurture an understanding of what a leader is. The trail experience helps develop self-reliance, improves judgement, decision making, respect, and a sense of responsibility that helps leaders thrive in today’s rapidly changing business landscape.

The benefits of a wilderness experience

  • Chance to destress and reconnect with who you really are
  • Amazing bonding, team building and relationship building
  • A Digital Detox, no cell phones, social media
  • Detox – healthy food, no alcohol or artificial stimulants, exercise and personal space
  • Tranquility – solitude and meditation. Stimulates flow of creative thinking
  • Different stimulus of adrenalin and responsibility in looking after and working with peers
  • Test personal boundaries and comfort zones
  • Learn new skills- flora, fauna, bush craft, astronomy, ecology, tracking
  • Become ambassadors for a cause – protection of wilderness areas, anti- mining and anti-poaching lobbyists,
  • Rewild yourself and develop a language of wilderness and wild spaces
  • Explore the spirituality of wilderness
  • Wilderness immersion has a significant psychological healing properties
  • No hierarchical pressure
  • Leadership quality development
  • Provides neutral space in which to explore company issues

Woodland Basecamp for organisations

With The Life Adventure

The Woodland Basecamp workshop aims to teach all the skills needed to spend a whole day comfortably in the woods. Our presenters Andrew and Emma combine their knowledge of outdoor culture, nature and adventure with their background in illustration and design. They have been living in a woodland environment for eight years and have learnt most from life by simply staying put in one spot and allowing nature to reveal itself.  They’ll share with you how to set up camp, using lightweight tarps and clever knots, find and prepare firewood, teach fire lighting using natural tinders, cook food over fire and carve useful objects with simple tools. Most of all though, they’ll teach you how to switch on your senses and become more attuned to the rhythms of nature, making for a richer, deeper outdoor experience.

This workshop can be taught across all levels from senior leaderships teams and down the line.

Through humour, charisma and expertise, Chris brings out the potential in everybody and people leave not just inspired and energised, but thinking a little differently about the world: Equipped with tangible skills to deliver immediate change to their lives. The Guardian recently summed up Chris’s style as ‘a long haired twinkly eyed cross between Richard Branson and a wizard’, which paints the most accurate picture: A dynamic business change-maker with a magical hippy vibe.
