From zodiac-themed Christmas window displays, star-themed catwalks and ‘intuitive’ personal shopping – the fashion world has embraced astrology to give it that ‘personal touch’.
As the excitement builds outside Selfridges Christmas window this year, shouting how super-cool it looks, it’s another clear sign (pardon the pun) that the fashion world has really taken all things astrology to it’s heart. It’s reported that Taurus and Leo have been the two most popular of this year’s zodiac-themed windows, although it doesn’t stop there. If you venture inside the store you’ll not only find Mystic Meg hanging out in Santa’s grotto, by nighttime you can also attend workshops on alchemy, meeting your animal spirit and how to make a dreamcatcher. And whilst astrology has been in the mainstream for quite some time, offerings, and the appetite for them, have not. It’s the sign of a changing world and one where more and more people are looking to embrace advice and tools to help them live a more fulfilling existence – even if it is amongst the shopping frenzy of Oxford St.
With mysticism, tarot cards and crystals all being given the glittery once over by brands from Chanel to Givenchy (Chanel’s new perfume Chance was accompanied by a surreal social media star sign campaign), now even the biggest sceptics are interested and sites such as Numinous have popped up to appease these growing appetites. The trend is all down to the need to invent something different and stand out in a world where so much choice exists. Selfridges new Shop By Star service is a brilliant idea that taps into this latest trend. They accompanying in-house pyschic Jayne Wallace offers ‘intuitive shopping services’ based on the elements of your start sign (earth, air, water, fire) and offers readings and crystal messages. So is this interest in star signs just another passing trend? You’d imagine so, yet according to the Evening Standard, it’s here to stay. The reason being is for the same reasons we mentioned above. In speeded-up world many people, including those in the fashion world, are looking for ways to slow down and get meaning from their existence. Astrology offers a tool to help solve a personal puzzle and give back a sense of magic on the world that’s not the latest fad, but hundreds of years old.
