24hr Reset Retreat At May Hill Gloucs

With Danny Shmulevitch

RESET RETREAT MAY HILL
THE GATEWAY TO A DEEPER CONNECTION

The Reset Retreat at May Hill provides a gateway to deeper connection – to yourself, to nature, and to your colleagues. What you’ll learn in these precious hours can be used to inform your decision-making at work as well as at home and enable you to more easily access your intuition wherever you are.

Your team will spend 24 hours in Danny’s company as he shares the timeless wisdom gained during forty years spent living and working among indigenous tribespeople. You will experience what it feels like to reconnect with your instinctual self by dissolving the separation between you and nature and explore a deeper, more physical way of feeling and connecting with the world.

What to expect

The environment is not separate from ourselves;
we are inside it and it is inside us; we make it and it makes us.”

Davi Kopenawa, Yanomami tribesman

Arrival

You’ll arrive to a beautifully restored farmhouse in Gloucestershire, at the foot of May Hill, where you’ll be made to feel at home and well-cared for in every sense. We travel from from here, on foot, to the beautiful woodland and wild and open grassland of May Hill, a Site of Special Scientific Interest, with its spectacular views and natural green cathedral.

Schedule

Arrive at May Hill Farm at 11.30am, where you’re invited for a delicious, locally-sourced lunch. You can either arrange your own travel independently, or we can arrange this for you. Danny will provide compelling insights, based on the wisdom of the indigenous people of Sinai and Kalahari, that underpin the purpose of this retreat.

After lunch, we’ll walk for a mile and half to our basecamp. Along the way, you’ll understand the orientation of the energy field, and the impacts of the way we live today on our ability to feel and connect with it.

You’ll spend the night sleeping under the stars in comfort, held by the beauty of the ancient woodland. Ideally, we recommend an overnight fast (no eating from lunch to breakfast the following morning). Our experience has shown that this is the best way to gain clarity in both mind and body. This is optional and we will support you if you choose note to take part.

At dawn, we’ll make our way to the top of May Hill to celebrate the expansion that is possible when we dissolve our separation from nature.

We’ll break the fast with a vegetarian breakfast by the fire back at May Hill Farm. Here, there will be the opportunity to discuss the experience and explore the everyday ways in which we can use what we’ve learned to tune in and reconnect to our environment in our every day lives.

What to bring

Comfortable backpack
Good shoes
Sleeping bag
Torch
Appropriate clothing for the weather and

We’ll provide

Breath Retreat In Lanzarote (3-7 nights)

With Alan Dolan
What’s it all about and why go on this life-changing retreat?

Have you ever watched a small child at play? Completely absorbed in the moment and totally unselfconscious. Perfect authenticity. No facades. Simply being. It’s a great reminder of our inherent ability to live this way. So when did we lose that ability and how do we get back there?

From a very early age we are taught how NOT to be authentic. Parents give children signals as to what is ‘ok’ and ‘not-ok’, and children adopt strategies in order to regain approval. For children, non-authentic behaviour has a short term gain. Over time however it becomes the norm, leading us further and further away from who we really are.

Our relationships with others are a direct reflection of the one we have with ourselves. You can’t hope for intimacy with another person if you aren’t intimate with yourself. If you’re looking for authenticity you need to be authentic with yourself. If you want respect from others you need to be respectful with yourself. If you’d like to see through the facades of others you must get behind your own facade first.

Breathwork is your ticket back to the remembrance of your authentic self, a journey which can open you further than you ever imagined possible. It’s the best adventure you will ever have, and unlike even the most fabulous holiday it doesn’t stop when you get back home. It’s literally the ultimate trip.

Breathwork allows you to lighten up, and realise that you are already ok as you are. The facade you’ve spent years constructing will simply fall away, allowing you to spend time with your true self, learning your needs and wants. You can disengage from the drama, find your centre, find joy inside yourself – and consciously create a life you are happy to be a part of.

The Healing Power of Breath

Humans have been aware of the healing power of their breath for millennia. Through the centuries we’ve developed a vast array of breathing practices, all designed to bring about physical and emotional wellbeing and connect with our deeper selves.

But in today’s society, we often neglect our bodies’ built-in capabilities. Imagine owning the highest specification TV in existence, keeping it plugged in on standby and then living with it for years and years without ever actually turning it on. The fact is, most of us live in ‘standby mode’ most of the time. The most powerful mechanism is literally right beneath our noses waiting to be explored, yet we rarely give it more than a passing thought.

Conscious breathing is a powerful and safe way to infuse the body with oxygen and energy, recharging our own (often depleted) systems to work to their healing capacity. And it facilitates openings to higher levels of consciousness, allowing us to tap into our deeper resources and live better, easy, more joyful lives.

With breathwork we can enjoy optimum health, mental and emotional clarity, and experience an ever-deepening relationship with ourselves. It’s the means by which we can embark upon the ultimate journey: the one where we discover who we really are. And it can facilitate the growth needed in order for us to transform into who we’re capable of becoming.

What you’ll gain (and we’ve experienced it ourselves, so know all of these to be true)
  • Be the healthiest you’ve ever been
  • Feel completely energised
  • Experience deeply nourishing peace and relaxation
  • Move beyond whatever is standing between you and your happiness
  • Become aware of emotions halting your personal growth
  • Let go of emotional baggage permanently and easily
  • Release anxiety and alleviate depression
  • Develop a new dimension to your yoga and/or spiritual practice
  • Understand the nature of spirit
  • Open your breath and expand your life
The Technique

All of Alan Dolan’s work is based around one simple breathing technique, which you can vary depending on how you want to feel or what you’d like to achieve. You’ll be taught how to use conscious breathing effectively and be guided and supervised as you go along – paving the way for really transformative experiences.

Lanzarote and the villa where you’ll be staying

Situated just 79 miles off the coast of Africa, Lanzarote is the most easterly of the Canary Islands and has been Alan’s home for the past 11 years. In 2011, after more than a year of searching, Alan found the ‘Dream Place’ for these retreats – a sanctuary of peace and seclusion in a rural location with sea and volcano views, ten minutes from the beautiful beach at Famara.

The villa is in an elevated position, with terraced patio areas and private, shady spots to lounge. The 5-star accommodation is mostly arranged around the sheltered private pool, with two of the rooms opening directly out to it. Nearby, you can soak in the hot tub after your twice-daily breath sessions and drink in the awe-inspiring vistas as the sunsets.

Your 1-1 breath sessions with Alan always take place in the complete privacy of the therapy room. And as there are only ever a maximum of four guests staying at any one time, you can be as private or as involved as you wish to be – most people choosing to do both at different times during their stay. Those attending often say the other people present during their stay really add to their experience.

The Rooms

THE LOFT

The Loft

A light and airy double room with floor to ceiling windows, sea/volcano views and direct access to the pool terrace. The space has been furnished using a mixture of Indonesian, Spanish and Turkish pieces, resulting in a relaxed, stylish environment. The teak four-poster bed and ensuite bathroom/dressing area complements the living space beautifully.

THE SUITE

The Suite

The spacious Suite is made up of a double bedroom, bathroom and lounge. Both the bedroom and the lounge have patio doors opening directly onto the pool area. The lounge can also be used as a second bedroom, making The Suite ideal for friends or family who wish to visit the retreat together.

SKYVIEW

Skyview Room

A double bedroom with ensuite bathroom, with an atrium skylight perfect for watching the stars. The high-spec bathroom also features a shower/steam room.

The Food

Delicious and healthy, Alan’s vegetarian cuisine is prepared by his resident chef from local, seasonal produce.

Other information

Hiring a car is recommended as the villa is in a rural location, and if you really want to explore the island it’s a must. Car hire is very reasonably priced and can be arranged on your behalf, but you will still be met at the airport irrespective of whether or not you hire a car. It’s remarkably easy to drive around the island; there is very little traffic and it’s a great way to experience the incredible landscapes.

If you don’t want to drive, don’t worry – Alan is happy to drop you at the beach, and half or full island day tours are also available. You can walk on pristine sandy beaches, surf at Famara or swim in the crystal clear ocean, go on nature walks or volcano climbs, or soak up the local culture at fiestas; Lanzarote really is the most magical of islands. It enjoys a mild dry climate with average daytime temperatures ranging from about 21°C in January to 29°C in August. With total annual rainfall at just 140mm, so your time on this retreat is likely to be bathed in warm, dry weather whatever time of year you visit.

What’s included
  • One 60-minute 1-1 breath session each day (ex. arrival + departure days)
  • One 60-minute group breath session each day (ex. arrival + departure days)
  • Full board vegetarian meals and drinks prepared by our chef

My Breathing Space retreat was just that… space for myself to focus on me, just me. Alan’s experience, natural compassion and intuition enabled me to learn about myself and to ‘clear’ emotionally and physically. At the end of the week I felt stronger, clearer, spiritually and literally ‘lighter’… a life changing week. I am resolved to make it an annual retreat. Worth every penny and more.”

Emma, Cambridge

Alan Dolan is one of the best alternative practitioners/ breathworkers I’ve had the privilege to work with. His level of care for and intuitive understanding about the needs of his clients is second to none and I highly recommend him to any and everyone embarking on a journey of self discovery and/or looking for a way to live a happier, healthier and more peaceful life”

Naomie Harris, Oscar, Bafta & Golden Globe nominee

I have practiced yoga for 8 years and meditation for 5 years and have always struggled with breathing and connecting the breath. I felt constricted across the chest and stuck. I knew I wasn’t breathing to my full capacity and that was the motivating factor for my initial interest in transformational breath. My actual experience extended way beyond any expectations I ever believed for what could be achieved through breathing! The breath work took me on a huge healing journey in 5 days and for the first time in my life I could feel my heart softening and opening. The work Alan does is incredible, truly life changing and transformative – Thank you for an amazing experience, Alan.”

Breath, Body & Beyond – A 1-Day Private Retreat For Women

With Andrea

Justine is the Queen of British Breathwork and Lucas’s restorative massages combine intuition and insight with bodywork, allowing profound shifts. Conde Nast Traveller Spa & Wellness Guide 2023

Justine and renowned body psychotherapist Andrea Lucas are teaming up in 2023 to launch an immersive one day retreat that draws upon ancient teachings integrating powerful touch, movement, Breathwork and active listening to help women in overwhelm and HFA (High Functioning Anxiety). The retreat will be for you, and you alone, with a 100% focus on you, your needs, desires and requirements.

Breath, Body & Beyond’s mission is to help educate you into facilitating your own healing. You’ll be guided through a magical, restorative, informative and healing day, helping you find the root cause of your physical and emotional discomfort and give you the tools you need to overcome the challenges you face. In this one unique day retreat, you’ll be supported in rediscovering your true nature and begin the process of healing deeply the symbolic tunes of your body. Justine and Andrea hold a sacred safe space, allowing your heart to open, enabling you to embrace new feelings of wholeness and radiance. You’ll leave feeling transformed with a deep inner peace.

What you’ll experience

1. Begin the process of alleviating pain and ill health

At their root, pain and ill health have unspoken and unexpressed thoughts and most of these remain unexamined. Breathwork and body psychotherapy will help to gently begin the process of helping remove these from the body.

2. Change the way you think

Your body is a metaphor of your mind. What shows up in your body has everything to do with your mind. Your body is designed to thrive and heal, but often the mind gets in the way and disrupts the process. Changing our thoughts is a pathway to self-healing and this one-day retreat will start you thinking in an entirely different way about yourself, and about your body.

3. Reclaim your personal power

Our potential for healing is actually limitless, we just don’t realise it. This retreat will help you reactivate the parts of yourself you’ve closed down over the course of your lifetime and reclaim control over your life, making better, more conscious, clearer decisions about yourself, your health and your life in general. Working with your breath on an ongoing basis (we’ll teach you how) is a wonderful way of keeping in tune with the inner you.4. Helping you deal better with stress and anxiety

Most people spend way too much of their day living with elevated stress and anxiety levels which can lead to us disassociating from our feelings rather than the healthier way, which is to work through them as they arise. We’ll use powerful methods of releasing stuck energy that is held deeply in the tissues of the body, as well as showing you how to allow your emotions to arise whilst using helpful steps to avoid overloading yourself with stress and anxiety.

4. Release tension, trauma and emotional baggage

To be human is to have emotional baggage and often trauma, too. Tension in your body reflects the tension in your psyche because memories and emotions reside in the body resulting in energy blocks and imbalances. Emotions are energy and Breathwork and body psychotherapy begin the process of releasing these from the body before they manifest as dis-ease and illness, helping to transform the oldest and most painful memories, release physical tensions, soothe the heart and ultimately restore the body and mind to its optimal health. freeing you to live a healthier and happier life.

Breathe, Connect & Create In The Woods Sat 11th May 2024

With The Life Adventure

On Saturday 11th May 2024, join artist and sculptor Ruth Wheeler, and Breathwork coach and Life Adventure founder Justine Clement, for a magical day in a private woodland, offering you the chance to unwind and retreat from your undoubtedly busy life.

On arrival to this secret corner of Surrey, the Birtley Woodland Art Space lies just outside the beautiful town of Guildford. Its a community arts, crafts and wellbeing space for people to come together and learn from professional instructors who are utterly passionate about sharing and passing on their knowledge and skills to others.  Here you’ll feel your body’s rhythms slow to the pace of the woodland environment and gradually begin relax into its beautiful surroundings. This will be a small, intimate group and so arrival we’ll have a welcome tea and get to know each other.

Justine runs her Breathwork practice under the guise of Wonderbreath and has been described by Conde Nast as “The British Queen of Breathwork”.  She begins the day by leading you through a deeply connecting 2-hour Breathwork session on the camp’s beautiful covered decking area, lying beneath a canopy of trees. Conscious Connected Breathing is a gentle, simple technique that helps you to open up the full potential of your breathing system for better physical and emotional well-being. There are so many benefits to this transformative style of Breathwork, including a deepening relationship with yourself, increased energy, greater emotional clarity, better immune response, and increased ability to deal with stress in a healthy way. Described not only as a detox for every level of our being, Wonderbreath also provides the means by which you can embark upon the ultimate journey: the one where you discover who you really are.

After your deep, often transformational experience, we’ll take time out to have a quiet, reflective break and refreshments.

You’ll then be guided into some gentle, immersive Forest Bathing, where you’ll begin to feel how easy it is to open your senses more fully to nature and feel a part, rather than separate, from your surroundings.  The idea of Forest Bathing is a simple one. The term is a direct translation of the Japanese practice known as Shinrin-yoku, meaning bathing in the forest atmosphere, or taking in the forest through our senses. It’s one of the many incredible tools now available to help us connect back to nature and ultimately, back to ourselves.  This calming, somatic experience then leads into a therapeutic creative explorative workshop after lunch.

After lunch, Ruth will guide you into foraging for natural collage materials, which you’ll combine to use for sketching, printing and textures, on wood, paper, paint, as well as pyrography (the freehand art of decorating wood or other materials with burn marks which can  then be incorporated into a piece of art).  In a more relaxed state from the morning’s Breathwork and Forest Bathing, you’ll find you can tap more easily into a state of creative flow. The emphasis for this workshop is to come with no preconceived ideas and to explore yourself, your surroundings, the artistic materials available, the guidance offered, and to be inspired by nature and see what emerges. Your artistic creations may be totally abstract, you may find symbols emerging, or you may find yourself exploring colour, texture, or a feeling.  All these are there to be explored in this beautiful setting.

Ruth will also lead you through an hour of therapeutic movement and stretching in the afternoon, along with an aromatic dressing and some Yoga Nidra, so that you leave us feeling utterly dreamy and thoroughly relaxed.

We will drink and eat together throughout the day and enjoy a seasonal homemade lunch of salads, bread and soup and cake. The food will be vegetarian, but please let us know if you are vegan or gluten, or dairy free.

This retreat day is going to be kept small at a maximum of 8 people to provide an intimate, safe space.

To take part in the Breathwork, please ensure you have none of the following contraindications. If you do, please get in touch before booking:

Canadian Wilderness of Wonders

With The Life Adventure

Imagine the magic of being whisked away from your busy everyday life to remote peace and solitude amid the magnificence of the Canadian Cariboo Mountains wilderness. This is a really special adventure, accessible only to a very lucky few, in spectacular remote high mountain valleys with beautiful lakes, grizzly bears and wildlife and spectacular mountain scenery.

Let it touch your soul – invigorate and recharge your inner being. This pure life experience in a place where your only neighbours are mountain goats, mountain caribou, grizzlies and blackbears, moose and wolves. It’s just you and the wilderness. It’s a rustic yet satisfyingly complete spirit quest and way of interacting with nature on its own terms where time is seemingly endless.

This signature wilderness adventure destination in the Cariboo Mountains in central British Columbia offers you the rare opportunity to connect with nature and “see through the eyes of the forest”. We work with one of Canada’s top bear and wildlife specialists in bear, recognised as the pioneer in the bear viewing industry traversing the same paths as the bears and wildlife from the salmon bearing rivers of a rare interior rainforest to the alpine beauty of the Cariboo Mountains.

Deep in British Columbia’s remote Cariboo Mountains lies a brand new floating ‘glampsite’, the only one of its kind in Canada. Moored on Quesnel Lake (the deepest known fjord lake in the world) it’s run by our guide who is known as the Bear Whisperer due to his special relationship with the area’s numerous grizzlies. The camp is small but comfortable and holds two smart safari-style tents containing double beds and loo fixed to a floating platform around 20 metres from the shoreline. And it’s the only place operating on this basis almost exclusively in an area the size of Switzerland. So what we really love about this is that it puts you deep into a place that few humans ever get to go.

Each morning you’ll head out on a boat through the Mitchell River system, a mist-bloated place where garlands of lichen hang wet and heavy from centuries-old red cedars and colossal bull moose crash through the forest.  The interior forest also has its very own climate.  At certain times of the year, too, nearby ice fjords are ablaze with sockeye salmon ploughing steadily upstream on their migration route to spawn. And as you drift along, huge bald eagles float down on to willowy tree branches and the screeches of stellar jays fills the air.

And the bears, oh the bears. They come thick and fast as you meander upstream.  From huge males crossing the river in front of you, to sows with cubs, fully submerged, feasting on the hoards of salmon. Gary, your guide, spends his life with these bears and knows them by name and can second-guess their behaviours.

Floating Glamping Lodge

The floating glamping lodge, is in a quiet bay on the deepest fjord lake on earth near the mouth of one of the major salmon spawning rivers. From here you’ll experience a wide diversity of incredible adventures that include exceptional bear and wildlife viewing, birding, walking safaris through the rare interior rainforest with trees over 1000 years old, kayaking, forest bathing, hiking in rich boreal forests and alpine, exploring unique ecosystems with rare plants and spectacular wild flowers.

The lodge equipped with luxury wall tents gives you 360 degree mountain views where you can see bears and other wildlife from dawn to dark. And don’t forget a view like this ensures the brilliance of the nighttime skies where the stars that brighten the heavens are only dimmed when the Northern Lights/Aurora Borealis dance across the skies. It’s the ideal place to disconnect from real life, reinvigorate and re-energise. You’ll feel the freedom and exhilaration of breathing fresh pure mountain air and the everyday stresses of life slowly ebb away in the peaceful quiet of this mountain paradise.

From the lodge you’ll have:

  • Magical 360-degree mountain views, star gazing, northern lights at night; wake to the haunting early morning call of the loon.
  • Forest Bathing (known as Shinrin-Yoku – connecting with nature with all your senses bringing a sense of balance and well being, re-energizing and reinvigorating your body, soul creating mindful peace). Otherwise known as “seeing with the eyes of the forest”.
  • Walking through a rare ancient interior rainforest to grizzly bear viewing sites.
  • Wildlife that may be seen includes grizzlies, black bears, mountain goat, moose, Mountain Caribou, wolf, mule deer, lynx, wolverine, birds.
  • Grizzly bears and salmon on wilderness rivers by jet boat, wildlife, birds and nature.
  • Walking safari through rare ancient old growth forest to grizzly/wildlife viewing sites.
  • Hiking from old growth forest through boreal forest and into the alpine.
  • Kayaking the world’s deepest fjord lake, exploring ancient old growth forest and limestone caves.
  • Raw nature, wild flowers and plants, and unique ecosystems.
  • Guides with over 30 years experience guiding the wilderness traveller

Durations and itineraries are totally flexible. We can add city stays to either side if you wish, or you can simply fly in to the wild and remain there for the duration of your stay. Contact us to discuss details and we’ll provide you with a cost to include or exclude flights.

Deep Core Awareness Retreats (1-14 nights)

With Danny Shmulevitch

In an age of busyness, stress and chronic overstimulation, success comes at a price. Many of the world’s most accomplished leaders and entrepreneurs find it hard to switch off or make time to connect with themselves. And yet nurturing that connection is essential for real productivity, creativity and happiness. The demands of our fast paced world draw our attention outward and away from the source of our abilities — our inner core, which is the well-spring of intuition, inspiration and the ability to think outside of the box. Our ability to successfully manage the challenges ahead depend on a renewed connection to the best within us and the cultivation of new set of ‘eyes’ that enable to see the timeless wisdom that can inform best-choice decision making.

The cultivation of a new set of ‘eyes’ begins by taking time out to retreat from a frenetic world to explore and rediscover the value and vitality of your deep self. Taking quiet time to reconnect with your authentic self clears the mind and allows a deep perception that gives new perspectives and understandings. Looking at the bigger picture through the lens of your inner picture provides insights and inspired strategies that may be otherwise inaccessible. Gaining access to that inner picture is most easily achieved in a beautiful natural setting that invokes awe and wonder.

The Deep Core Awareness retreats offered by Meaningful Travel 101 and Danny Shmulevitch provide bespoke programmes for leaders and their organisations to deeply reconnect with the best in themselves and each other in the stunning beauty of wilderness landscapes.

Danny is a masterful mentor in the fine art of rediscovering and listening to our powerful inner selves — the essential process of linking to and realising our latent potential. He has extensive experience facilitating leader’s inner work through the connection with natural settings around the world, from the Sinai Desert to the Kalahari Desert and beyond to the Arctic Circle. He is an intuitive, humorous and adaptable facilitator who is responsive to the specific needs of each individual. He is skilled in enabling participants to draw nourishment from places of exceptional beauty and match it to their own inner majesty, helping them to leave after a short period of time with a renewed sense of what matters most and how to achieve that in their personal and professional lives.

Our Deep Core Awareness retreats offer people the chance to totally reset their inner being, resulting in a balanced alignment of their head and their heart. This leads to deep perception and new levels of efficiency. Deep Core retreats offer a chance for complete renewal and re-energising of participants. The shift to deep inner coherence gives participants the clarity to make better decisions and improve their communications, in both their business and personal life. Participants report that the effort to listen to their inner core, in the quiet of natural surroundings, lets them listen more carefully and empathetically to others. They say that this helps them build better relationships and more dynamic teams.

Our Deep Core Awareness retreats are currently being offered at Finca de Ariant in the magnificent pristine wild landscape of the Tramuntana mountains of north-west Mallorca. If you’re interested in holding retreats in other locations, get in touch as we’ll create totally bespoke experiences too.

Hoanib Valley Camp Namibia

With The Life Adventure

Namibia receives barely 500,000 visitors a year. And the good news is, that whilst more camps are now emerging, many are linked to conservations projects. Noanib Valley Camp is just one of those.

In a country jam-packed with vast, spectacularly beautiful landscapes, Kaokoland may just be the most incredible of them all. Deep in north-western Namibia, the area is a melee of towering mountains, sand dunes, and huge expanses of desert, scattered with unique wildlife and nomadic Himba settlements. It’s also one of Namibia’s most remote and wild environments, and one that not many will get the chance to discover in a lifetime.

Hoanib Valley Camp is a joint venture between the local communities and the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, the world’s only Africa-wide giraffe conservation organisation. The camp is an elegant, intimate affair that immerses you into the wilds of the desert. The six rooms blend seamlessly with the environment, offering a simple aesthetic that matches the rugged landscape down to a tee. Days are spent tracking endangered rhino, desert-adapted elephant, and of course desert-adapted giraffe, before retiring to a private veranda to marvel at the magnitude of the surroundings.

In the midst of the empty landscapes of Northern Namibia, the rivers in this arid terrain, with few roads and almost no towns, is dry for 50 weeks of the year. Created in a spectacular setting, the camp overlooks one of these sand rivers and is a new venture which is working here to monitor desert-dwelling giraffes.  The camp is sophisticated yet leaves virtually no footprint in this fragile eco-system. It also makes a considerable contribution to the Himba people, one of the most traditional of African tribes.

Visits to villages and encampments almost untouched by the modern world are the highlight of any stay at Hoanib. You’ll stay in one of six canvas tents, all with vast beds and local art. The setting is dramatic.

Why go?
  • Discover the true magnitude and magic of Namibia and visit a place that not many will ever have the chance to explore…
  • This area is one of the best places to see desert adapted elephant, giraffe, lion, rhino, mountain zebra, and oryx.
  • Sit on your private veranda and contemplate the stark beauty of the landscape spread out all around you.
  • Learn more about the ground-breaking giraffe research that is being conducted in this remote corner of Namibia.
  • Spend time with local Herero people and learn a little of their fascinating way of life in such a harsh climate.
  • Embark on a guided nature walk and uncover the smaller flora and fauna of the desert.
Accommodation

Hoanib Valley’s six guest tents blend perfectly into the rugged environment. The colours, textures and patterns are inspired by the experience of the Hoanib; the rich ochre of the dunes, the geometric patterns of the Himba people and, of course, the giraffe that inspired this project. True to the camp’s ethos they’ve sourced materials local and you’ll find furniture shaped by the local Rundu carpenters and Himba carvers, as well as baskets weaved by the people of the Omba Project in Windhoek. The whole camp is clean and green, leaving virtually no footprint on this fragile eco-system. It’s entirely solar powered to ensure carbon emissions are kept to a minimum, and the tents sit on decks made of a wood, bamboo and 70% recycled-material composite.

More about the conservation efforts of Noanib Valley Camp and the Giraffe Conservation Foundation

The Giraffe Conservation Foundation (GCF) are the foremost experts on giraffe in the world. They are based in Namibia but their work extends beyond Namibia into Zambia, Niger, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Uganda, with their pioneering focus being on desert giraffe in northwest Namibia. Through their extensive work on the ground and partnerships with zoos and universities, GCF have identified four distinct species of giraffe, whereas before there was thought to be only one. This finding has elevated the conservation importance of the different populations. Concurrently, the hunting pressure on giraffe in northwest Namibia has increased while rainfall has decreased, putting Namibia’s iconic desert giraffe under threat. Hence, the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, together Hoanib Valley Camp are creating a strong consistent presence in northwest Namibia to monitor desert giraffe and further understand population dynamics of the most arid reach of this southern giraffe sub-species.

Pause – a private one day micro retreat for friends

With The Life Adventure
EXPLORE REVIVE ENGAGE : A ONE DAY RESET

Welcome to your Micro-Retreat

Discover the transformative power of somatic movement & conscious connected breath.
Immerse yourself in a rejuvenating experience that will leave you feeling grounded, centred, and deeply connected to your body and breath.

Instead of a simple respite from the daily grind, we have designed this one-day micro retreat to empower you with the tools needed for reconnecting to your natural internal rhythm. We so often get caught up in the busyness of life, it can be difficult for us to learn how to slow down. Yet it’s only when we learn the skill of slowing down, vital in this fast-paced modern world, that we’re able to fully reset, recover and recalibrate.  This is an opportunity for you and your friends to rebalance and return to life with renewed energy. It’s also a gentle, yet expansive learning experience too, where you’ll each discover ways of replenishing your energy stores through the power of movement, breath and reflection.

EXPLORE your surroundings and connect to nature, with an immersive learning experience on the benefits of nature connection
REVIVE your body and mind, by releasing unwanted stress, strain and tension
ENGAGE with others through restorative connection, by sharing as much or as little as you like

Why book Pause?

You’ll all leave with more vitality, feeling far more relaxed, less stressed and importantly, equipped with tools to maintain it all after the day. You’ll be guided by two experts in their field through explorative movement situations, tuning deeply into your physical, emotional and personal self via your breath, and feel comfortable getting curious about what you can do with your body. Not only that, you’ll also learn how to connect more deeply with nature (and therefore yourself) and each other, whilst spending some important downtime in our location’s wonderful outdoor wood-fired hot tubs and sauna.

Somatic Movement

Gentle movements, performed with intention and at a very slow pace. The goal of this is to shift our attention from the external appearance of a pose or posture, to the internal felt experience of the movement. Through shifting our attention from output to experience, we notice how tension, stress and worry softens, and we learn more sustainable ways of living in our bodies.

Conscious Connected Breathwork

Conscious breathing is a gentle, simple technique that helps you to open up the full potential of your breathing system for better physical and emotional well-being. It’s been demonstrated to have many benefits, including increased energy, better immune response and increased ability to deal with stress in a healthy way. In the session Justine will give a short intro and you’ll lie on your back, with the whole group breathing together.

Nature Connection

We’ll immerse ourselves in the healing properties of nature. By exploring the four elements of water, wood, earth and sky, we reconnect to our own organic nature, and discover how these elements support us in our daily lives. Research shows that connecting to organic elements can elevate mood, reduce feelings of isolation, promote calm and decrease inflammation.

Pause In The Forest Reset For Teams

With The Life Adventure

An incredibly nurturing, healing, transformational 3-night experience deep in the ancient Forest of Dean awaits your team…

It’s been known for millennia that time spent in the forest has an incredible effect on our mind, body and soul. Here you will have the time you need to disconnect from your day-to-day life and let your nervous system feel soothed and rested amongst the wonder and rejuvenating properties of ancient woodland and sacred spaces. This retreat will form part of your life journey, where your body can begin to heal itself and come alive again as you learn tender, deep ways to reconnect with yourself and the natural world in this incredible ancient playground known as the Forest of Dean. You’ll rest your head in a magical retreat centre called ASHA, never before open to public for retreats, until now…

Asha fire pit.jpeg
About the location

There is magic in the air here. Tolkien was enchanted by the Forest of Dean and inspired to write ‘Lord of the Rings’. J K Rowling spent her youth in this area, too, enriching her imagination. Located on the edge of the forest, the ASHA Centre is a British educational charity and magnificent 500-year-old Georgian home surrounded by five acres of biodynamic gardens.  Until now it has been used as an educational retreat centre. It has a warm relaxed feel – a home, rather than a hotel.

It was founded by the human rights campaigner and author, Zerbanoo Gifford and for the past 15 years has been solely focussed on running and hosting transformative, holistic, educational programmes for the empowerment of young people from across the world, designed to bring about lasting inner, social, and environmental change. It is a rather special place with its own herb garden, a Peace Grove with fire-pit and orchards.  The Secret Garden includes a labyrinth surrounded by a sacred grove of indigenous trees planted by the Druids.

The rooms are traditional and comfortable, both in the main house and the stone cottages on site. Our sessions are based in the tranquil studio, spreading out to the grounds. The main practice space has a gorgeous panorama of the site, and the evening skies host glorious sunsets.

The centre was specifically designed to include spaces of inspiring, natural beauty for quiet contemplation. Furthermore, it is powered by sustainable energy from a biomass boiler and solar panels.

About the food

The Asha in-house retreat chefs will prepare 2 simple organic vegetarian meals per day for lunch and dinner, plus breakfast of cereals, fruit, yoghurt, and organic bread. On your day of arrival there will be lunch and dinner and on your departure day there will be breakfast for our final meal all together. We cater to your individual dietary requirements – simply let us know what you need.

Conscious Connected Breathwork

Wonderbreath is a form of Conscious Connected Breathwork.  Therapeutic in nature, this is a gentle, simple, healing technique that helps you to open up the full potential of your respiratory system for better physical and emotional well-being. It’s been demonstrated to have so many benefits, including deepening your relationship with yourself, increasing energy levels, giving greater emotional clarity, improving your immune response, and increasing your ability to deal with stress in a healthy way. These are powerful group sessions where Justine will guide you through each session, called ‘a detox for every level of your being’ and no experience is necessary.

Shaun Soho.jpg
Somatics & Movement
Somatic movement invites you on a journey through the internal landscape of the body and moves us into the ‘felt’ sense, giving us a break from our ‘thinking’ selves. These are gentle movements, performed with intention and at a very slow pace. The goal of this is to shift our attention from the external appearance of a pose or posture, to the internal felt experience of the movement. Through shifting our attention from output to experience, we notice how tension, stress and worry softens, and we learn more sustainable ways of living in our bodies. The combination of Somatic movement and Breathwork with Shaun will ignite the deep healing powers of your body from within.

Cold Water Immersion (Sacred Well)

There are several options for this right near ASHA, but our favourite has to be the water at Saint Anthony’s Well – whose name dates from the medieval period – is known as a holy, or sacred, well. Prehistoric flint implements have been found in the spring’s vicinity as well as Iron Age and Roman artefacts and it seems likely that the well was a ritual site for a long period of time. The spring, which runs into the gardens at ASHA, is reputedly very ancient and in front lies a stone ‘bathing pool’ built by the Romans – three feet of deep, clear, totally unpolluted water. Saint Anthony’s Well water is always extremely cold and for generations, local people have bathed in it for the treatment of rheumatism and arthritis.  It’s just a short, five-minute walk to the well from the house, through the forest and lies in an open area of stunning beech trees. So whether you want to dip, or watch, you’re guaranteed a very magical experience.

Shinrin-yoku (Forest Bathing)

Forest bathing, a literal translation of the Japanese term Shinrin-yoku, is scientifically proven to improve our health. It means to bathe in the atmosphere of the forest with your five senses to improve your wellbeing. Countless Japanese studies have revealed how it boosts our immune systems, reduces our stress hormones, reduces our blood pressure, enhances our mental wellness and bolsters our brain health. It can provide emotional healing, improve our sleep-wake cycles, improve relationship skills, reduce stress, and reduce feelings of anger and aggression. These gentle introductions to the practice of forest bathing including sensory and meditative exercises, taking time to explore our woodland landscape, tuning in to our micro and macro awareness of nature and noticing how it communicates with us.

MEET SHAUN AND JUSTINE
Shaun-Brooking.webp
Shaun is a coach, mover, thinker and educator. In his past life as an athlete, he learned the hard way – that the world of performance and fitness is not about health. And he ended up burnt out, injured and lost. He has spent the last 15 plus years figuring out what it means to be in a body and live to his full potential without the cost to his health. He has studied across many fields – neuroscience, physiology, embodiment, movement and spirituality – and he integrates these to help people build life-long skills. Skills that help you buffer the effects of stress and anxiety, give you the ability to unplug and slow down, and to be the best you can be.
Justine .png

Justine, founder of The Life Adventure and a certified Breathwork coach.  She was born curious and adventurous. She’s spent the last 15 years exploring ways to live and feel better through ashtanga yoga, kinesiology, Celtic shamanism and mythology, psychotherapy, plant communication and mindfulness, to name a few. For many years, she was a self-confessed ‘on-the-go’ CEO of an experiential travel company and no words of warning from others about the importance of slowing down, could stop her. She only really listened after a series of injuries forced her to stop. Her slow recovery invited her to start learning how to ‘be’ rather than ‘do’. She’s also a certified Shinrin-yoku guide with the International Society of Nature and Forest Medicine (INFOM)and set up/runs the Selsey Sea Bathing Society to encourage people back into the cold water.

You’ll learn about fire, shelter, water, wild foods, tracking and stalking. This is a brilliant two-hour session packed with games and activities throughout and is a great chance to learn the basics of bushcraft and survival skills.

BREATHWORK WORKSHOP 1HR 15 MINS

In our experience, every day should include this – a Conscious Connected Breath session, designed to detox and destress your system. This session will reconnect your mind and body and ultimately connect you back to yourself. It will either be held in the camp’s Giant Tipi, outdoors, or possibly even in the woods.

Breathwork is a safe and ancient practice, known for its immune system boosting abilities and self-healing powers, allowing you to come out of your busy mind and drop more deeply into your body. There are literally hundreds of breath practices to try and your stay at Kymani will allow you to experience one of these, known as Conscious Connected Breath. In this session you’ll discover a technique that will:

– Help you deal successfully with stress
– Help you sleep better
– Energise and uplift you
– Show you how to engage with your diaphragm – the breathing apparatus you were born with, but forgot about!
– Boost your immune system
– Help you release emotional tension and stress

*Please note Conscious Connected Breathwork is not suitable for those with glaucoma, pregnant (1st trimester only) epilepsy, detached retina, prior strokes or seizures, pior diagnosis by a health professional of bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, psychotic or borderline psychotic states.

SHINRIN-YOKU/FOREST BATHING EXPERIENCE 2HRS

Shinrin-yoku means bathing in the forest environment for wellbeing. Humans have spent 99.9% of their development in nature and 0.01% in urban environments. This is a gentle introduction to begin a new relationship with it, including sensory and meditative exercises. In this session we’ll show you how to tune into your micro and macro awareness of nature and notice how it communicates with us. You’ll experience ways to:

– Reduce your stress levels – research has found that leisurely forest walks yield a 12.4 per cent decrease in the stress hormone, cortisol, compared with urban walks. People report better moods and lower anxiety.

– Improve your mood – academics at Derby University have conducted a meta study of existing research which concludes that connecting to nature can be linked to happiness and mental wellbeing. Spending time in nature releases hormones that relate to the pursuit of joy, connecting to calm and avoiding threats.

– Free up your creativity – University of Utah research shows participants saw a 50% improvement in creative problem solving after time immersed in nature with all access to modern technology removed.

– Boost your immune system – trees and plants emit ‘phytoncides’ which we breathe in when we spend time in the forest. These have been proven to enhance the activity of Natural Killer cells that help our bodies fight disease.

SUNRISE YOGA 1HR

These one-hour morning or early evening yoga sessions are infused with mindfulness and personal development elements and are all suitable for beginners as well as more experienced yogis of all ages and abilities. Best done before breakfast at 8am or towards the end of the day when the sun is going down.

Soul Safari – Walking in the Footsteps of African Giants

With The Life Adventure

We were recently invited to experience two incredible nights at one of Africa’s newest and most ecologically-impressive game reserves. On arrival we found an incredible story of passion, perseverance, commitment and wonder and here we describe what we encountered and what you’re likely to if you decide to visit.

There is a sacred place in the heart of Zululand. A fertile land of undisturbed perfection, where no man has control and the rules of nature prevail. Once the Royal hunting ground of King Shaka of the Zulu, and the origin of every Southern White Rhino in the world; uMfolozi Big Five Game Reserve offers a personal gateway into nature as it was before us, which is how they intend to keep it.

Through perseverance, an unbelievable commitment to conservation and their determination to protect the land, they have added swathes of tribal land to the oldest game reserve in Africa. This allows more space for its prolific denizens to increase their numbers. What we love is that this means those who make it to uMfolozi become better acquainted with the authentic side of wildlife, and encounter all the denizens of a precious eco-system. Our hope is that you emerge awakened to the plight of Mother Nature.

There are two lodges in the reserve – Mthembu Lodge and Biyela Lodge. Both offer refined accommodation and amenities which have been built in harmony with the environment using local people to build, harnessing the power of the sun to heat, and employing people from the surrounding local villages to take care of their guests.  This blend of subtle eco luxury allows you incredible surroundings whilst being immersed in an utterly safe, but also wild experience. Each lodge has a distinct style that pays homage to the Zulu nation through design and décor.

The teams at both lodges welcome you with a warm Zulu spirit and are personally invested in uMfolozi Big Five as the land belongs to them and their children’s children. The villa you sleep in was hand built by members of the surrounding community, and the fresh produce you delight in at meal times is harvested on our doorstep. Each part of your experience at uMfolozi Big Five Reserve invests in the world around you.

Why it’s so special

Abutting the Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park, uMfolozi Big Five Reserve is a wilderness area that has adjoined the wilderness area of the uMfolozi side of this great park which is the oldest in Africa and the second oldest in the world. Staying here allows you to experience something so unique that no money in the world could replicate it anywhere else. In the valleys where King Shaka of the Zulu once hunted; the origin of every Southern White Rhino in the world – you’ll get exclusive access to this sacred place where no man has control, and the rules of nature prevail. You’ll rekindle a personal relationship with nature while enjoying luxury lifestyle comforts, and excellent dining.

The Wilderness Safari Experience

The reserve’s vehicles are the only ones that have a right to operate in this wilderness area, in addition to the right to traverse the greater Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park. Their staff include the best rangers and trackers because what you experience is a not just the result of luck, but of patience and skill. With no tell-tale accomplices, no markings or signage and limited vehicular pathways the guides rely only on their intimate knowledge of the bush and its allusive denizens.

Guests at both lodges will be able to traverse the wilderness area on open game vehicles, in small groups of no more than six people and under the careful guidance of experienced rangers and trackers, or on foot with armed guides. More than 90 kilometre of dirt-track is shared only by game rangers and lodge guests, and none of the general public visiting the upper Hluhluwe iMfolozi game areas will have self-drive access to this pristine wilderness area. The routes drop low and range high, and your ranger will spoil you with sundowners out on trail, as also with early morning tea or a picnic on your dawn-drives. By day, once the heat has hastened most animals into the shade, you’ll enjoy the tranquillity of the lodge and your surroundings.

Why go?

You’ll be staying in the valleys  where the very first steps were taken with Operation Rhino almost seventy years ago under revered global conservationist, the late Dr Ian Player.

Biyela Lodge nestles low on a spectacular bend on the White Imfolozi. On the other side of the river, the dramatic cliffs are used by vultures in the early morning to launch to the skies upon thermals. On the banks of the river, the scarce sighting of wild dog has been noted amidst the steady stream of animals who come to quench their thirst. Crocodiles and hippo rule the waters and the roar of lion punctuate the wilderness night. On the doorstep of nature at work, a small number of guests (32 at most) can enjoy their luxurious private stand-alone suites, with access to a central lodge with pool, restaurant, bar and viewing decks. To the right when on the viewing deck, another set of cliffs mark the entrance to the valley where one of King Shaka of the Zulu’s most rebellious commanders, Mzilikazi and his clan hid from the wrath of the King.

Mthembu Lodge, even more intimate with only 22 beds, has a different character, although equally luxurious. Situated somewhat higher off the river, it has a panoramic view of the waters and the forest for a big-picture kind of experience. That the spot chosen for this Lodge has something special about it should be evident from the fact that Dr Ian Player stabled his horses, used first on patrols and later on wilderness leadership training, in this area. Staying at Mthembu Lodge allows you to immerse yourself in a part of this special history – the story of how Dr Player started with what would become a global effort to save the rhino from extinction.

Staying at either lodge means you’ll be able to traverse the wilderness area on open game vehicles, in small groups of no more than six people and under the careful guidance of experienced rangers and trackers, or on foot with armed guides. More than 90 kilometre of dirt-track is shared only by game rangers and lodge guests, and none of the general public visiting the upper Hluhluwe iMfolozi game areas will have self-drive access to this pristine wilderness area.

Those taking care of you are committed to sharing their stories of their ancestors and the great spirits that reside in this area. You are sure to see the world in a different light after your visit, we know we did. It is the experience of a lifetime, walking in the footsteps of giants.

The Burnout Retreat Thailand

With The Life Adventure

Remember you were once on fire about your job, passionate about your career and eagerly looking forward to your goals? Now it feels all but impossible to get up and go to work in the morning. Your energy is drained; your creativity is thwarted; you feel physically unwell. This is burnout.

Burnout can happen to anyone, but is especially common among executives, entrepreneurs and others with demanding, high-pressure jobs. It doesn’t happen overnight, but rather is the accumulation of long-term stress and the product of your environment, and if it’s not correctly addressed, it doesn’t go away easily either. Overcoming burnout requires life changes that support a sustainable relationship with your work – and with yourself.

The Dawn’s professional burnout retreat gives you an opportunity to shift out of overwhelm, gain some perspective and put healthy habits in place, so you can return to your life feeling clear-minded, happy and productive.

Signs and Symptoms of Burnout

Burnout often takes hold before you know what hit you – but if you know what signs to watch for, you’ll be able to see it coming and take the necessary steps to keep it at bay.

  • Anxiety – You might feel hyper-alert and jumpy, constantly worry about the future, or play out worst-case scenarios in your head.
  • Depression – You may feel guilty about your diminished performance at work or other areas of your life, leading to lowered self-esteem. Depression is a dangerous disorder – if you find yourself feeling hopeless or contemplating suicide, seek professional depression help right away.
  • Sleep disturbance – You may have a hard time falling asleep or wake up in the middle of the night. You feel restless at night and sleepy during the day. This gets progressively worse as burnout intensifies.
  • Fatigue – You constantly feel mentally and physically exhausted. This is exacerbated by accompanying insomnia.
  • Pain and illness – Stress often manifests physically, in symptoms such as gastrointestinal issues, headaches, muscle pain and more frequent bouts of sickness due to lowered immunity.
Effects of Untreated Burnout

The prolonged stress of being in a state of burnout can lead to a number of problems, such as:

  • Mental and physical exhaustion
  • Pessimism
  • Loss of interest in your job
  • Interpersonal issues in the office
  • Relationship and intimacy issues
  • Irrational irritability
  • Decreased productivity

It’s easy to see how the effects of burnout can get out of hand and carry over onto other areas of your life. Fortunately, however, burnout is highly treatable.

Why go here?

The Dawn is Asia’s leading addiction rehab and mental health retreat that focuses on healing on all levels. They have a team of highly qualified clinicians which is led by world-renowned behavioural health expert David Smallwood, formerly of the Kusnacht Practice in Switzerland and Priory Hospital in North London. They adhere to the highest standards of integrity and ethics with one goal in mind – your successful recovery. When you’re there, you’re in the hands of fully licensed professionals with years of experience in treating burnout and related conditions. We believe it’s a hugely effective option for making lasting change because when you’re stuck in a rut and need to make a significant life change, it’s best to do so in a new environment, away from your day-to-day patterning. In a residential recovery programme such as this, every day is fully scheduled with activities specifically designed to restore you to a state of balance. You’ll be surrounded by a compassionate, supportive group of counsellors and peers who are here to cheer you on and help you through your challenging moments. And, you’ll have access to our staff 24 hours a day, so you can breathe easily knowing all of your needs will be taken care of.

What you can expect

Comprehensive Cognitive Therapy

Compassionate counsellors will help you tackle the causes of burnout with their core via cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT). This will help you to recognise and correct your negative thought patterns, and teach you skills to cope with and change unhealthy behaviours.

The Dawn also uses cutting-edge methods like neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) to help you regain control of your thoughts and emotions, and trauma release exercises (TRE) to help you safely and effectively relieve deep muscular patterns of stress you’ve been holding in your body.

Burnout frequently drives users to self-medicate with substances like alcohol or anti-anxiety medications. Also on offer is an integrative treatment for dual diagnosis, or addictions that co-occur with burnout.

Holistic Wellness Treatments

Holistic therapies are proven to bolster your recovery success and make your treatment experience more enjoyable. The aim here is to provide you with a positive and memorable retreat experience, so that your relationship with your new practices is something you’ll happily carry with you into your daily life when you leave. Wellness therapies include:

  • Mindfulness meditation
  • Spa and massage therapy
  • Fitness exercise
  • Yoga
  • Pilates
  • Art therapy
  • Muay Thai

Presenter Danny Shmulevitch

Danny’s search for stillness began as a young child growing up in the Sinai desert. He lived with the semi-nomadic Sawad tribe near his family home in Galilee; his formative years spent sleeping fireside under the stars - free from the physical and human confines most of us accept as our reality. For over two decades, Danny worked with the Bedouin tribes to lead retreats and longer journeys in the Sinai desert. They were attended by ecological and spiritual leaders and other people who came to witness how we expand when we connect deeply with ourselves in nature. He set up the The Makhad Trust in 2002 to support the preservation of the natural heritage of the Bedouin and other nomadic communities of the world. He also led the restoration of oasis gardens throughout the Sinai region and built community wells, as well as a school. In the remote Amdo region of Tibet, he worked with indigenous communities to restore the murals in the Lukhang garden, built by Dalai Lama VI in the 17th century, and the Mani Walls near the Terton Chogar Monastery.
